Extended Warranties from the Dealer?
My wifes 2006 Volvo XC90 V8's factory 4 year, 50,000 mile warranty expires on the 20th of this month. I took it in for a regular service tonight, and talked to Volvo about extending the warranty. It looks like the best "deal" if it can be called that, is the one that extends the warranty for 3 more years, or 75K miles total. After going back and forth a bit, I got it "down" to $2,900. Ouch.
Other than a faulty rear wheel bearing, I haven't had a single problem with the car, but after reading Tim's Audi thread, and some of the others, I am very hesitant to not have a psuedo luxury car without a warranty, and we don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon (it has 42K miles on it, and my wife drives less now than the first year we got it). What is the Pelican brain trust think? I am not even considering any type of aftermarket warranty. I've had great luck with this dealership. Thanks Bill |

I say do it. If something goes south, you can run up a bill of $2,900 in short order.
Or look at it this way- less than a grand a year to not worry about fixing it. Hope it works out either way!

Normally, I don't do extended warranties but I did get the GM top of the line version for the JEEPGrand Cherokee we recently bought. It was just about bumper to bumper coverage for about 15.00 a month.
We are trading the JEEP in tomorrow on a Grand Caravan which still has the factory coverage up to 60,000 miles, I believe. I would get the coverage for your Volvo.

I usually get the extended warranty on my wife's vehicles, she tends to be a little rough on them. It has been beneficial to us so far.

I always get the extended warranty on my wife's car, she doesn't want me to touch it so it's ok. It can't be my fault and she has road service. This T Bird five year and 100k mile is up this May.

I get them.
Had an occasional noisy lifter during winter time on the 3000GT. Completely cosmetic issue but it annoyed me. Got a top end rebuild out of it. Also the $350 power antennae replacement. Apparently a biotch to get to on those cars. Not my problem, it's covered.

Thanks everyone so far. From the research I have done on the intrawebs, the V8 and transmission seem to be pretty stout. Its all the bells and whistles I am woried about.
The 911 turbo is a potential ticking timb bomb, I'd rather not have to worry about her car. I'm leaning towards picking it up. |

Make sure you understand exactly what's included and what not.. Years ago I bought a Chevy trailblazer and bought the best (most expensive) warranty they offered, this was a GM warranty not a Lubico, etc. (third party)
Well guess what? The friggin selenoid in the transmission failed and that part was excluded (listed in the fine print) so they wouldn't even try to fix it or pay for the labour to drop tranny. I wanted to kill someone that day. I talked to the manager and told him I was going to sue the dealership as supposedly they fixed that exact problem right before I tool posession of the car and that changed the tune, all of a sudden was "Goodwill repair", my @ss that was goodwill.. Never again Goverment Motors..

I'm surprised to see so many recommending an extended warranty. Usually it's the opposite. $2,900 is pretty strong, but probably worthwhile with what's at stake.
Suggestion- hold off just a bit. Be specific about the coverage, deductible, and year of your car. I'll check with a friend at a Volvo dealer. Maybe he can sell you one or suggest a better way to get it. I know sometimes manufacturers themselves solicit an extended warranty purchase to the retail buyer after the sale/before the factory warranty expires.

Extended warranties are a terrific deal.
For the dealer. Apply common sense - if someone's trying to sell you something, it's never in YOUR best interest - only theirs.

I would research the typical issues that they car has before 75K miles. If it looks as though it is likely to cost you more than $2900 over the next three years then it will be worth it. I don't think any of my family's cars went to the dealer with $3k worth of work from 50-75k miles but ymmv.

Extended warranties are a terrific deal for the dealer because it is one more product that they can make money on. They also make money on cars, yet you buy them. So as long as the dealer is making a fair profit, and not gouging, the warranty itself can be valueable. There are several levels of coverage so make sure you understand the differences. I'd buy the most comprehensive so you don't end up like Oracle, blaming the company for his lack of understanding. GM does offer bumper-to-bumper coverages.
