The economic meltdown made many of the money guys reconsider their perpencity to flaunt gaudy "bling" watches.

To me, the panerai fad looks ridiculous. One of our customers wears one - but he's a really big guy, and can get away with it.

I'd love to be able to wear a VC, a Cellini or Patek - but if I could afford the blasted thing, I'd probably destroy it.

Sounds like a lot of Rolexes around these parts...

I don't think of Panerai as a fad, they have been making that size watch for a long time, But, I would rather buy a Anonimo Polluce 10 ANNI, it's made in the old Panerai factory in Italy and about half the cost.

Yep. The mad Russian. Have you read his new book?

When you get time, I'd like to figure out which Patek you have and what you think of it. I'm in the process of getting rid of most of my watch collection and I want to end up with one Patek for special occasions and one Rolex for knocking around. I can't make up my mind which Patek suits me the most.

To add to what has already been said about this watch, I think Patek makes two of them a year, one in gold and the other in platinium...

Pretty exclusive club.

No, have not heard anything about him in years. I was really into the scene then headed overseas in the 80's for 10 years and lost touch with most everything in the area. As well lived in Tahlequah for a while but that was years ago.

Boy, thats a tough one having just two watches.

Two of mine were my Fathers (white gold Bulova and Rolex President with the bark finish band) so will never get rid of these. As well my first GMT master will stay. I like the Patek and VC a lot but also have a Franck Muller like this one: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1265408875.jpg

and really like it.

BTW,

Mark F, our "banned for now on Pelican" friend who is also a watch nut sent me this:

Tourbillon Watches In A Nutshell; Expensive, Fun To Watch, Serve Little Purpose | aBlogtoRead.com

Good article on watches like the ones we are talking about.

For years I've been saying you need a Rolex for sport, and a Patek for dress, everything else is just having fun.

Good ideas but what if you are a multi-faceted person? :)

Naw, I'm actually looking forward to it. I was up to around 2 dozen and that's just ridiculous.

I am also purging the excess cars, motorcycles, cameras, books, etc. I rent 4,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space to store the crap that I own that won't fit into a 5-6,000 sq. ft. house. It's just too much. Gotta simplify my life.

You sound like me. Am at a stage in life that I am paring things down as well. Looking at retiring in another 5-7 years and just do not need all of this crap.

Nice article on Tourbillons, Joe.
"It is basically saying to people, "look, I can afford a watch that has a lot more moving parts than your watch, doesn't it just look really complicated!""
And then, follow the link to eBay. Toubillons from $279K down to 'real' ones for $12.96 with free shipping.

I swear by my favorite watch:

And, of course, I'm sworn AT on numerous occasions. :)

Fake people wear fake watches.

Well, I am very pleased that you having me on ignore is making you so glad that I am not able to upset your ignorance, Oliver. :)

Not this watch, but for many others Web is the "mart"

As a collector of vintgae watches, I have 30 or so I bought on the Internet, both from Ebay and online watch dealers. Ebay is now the new price standard for watches. What's a watch worth? what someone is willing to pay for it at any given time. The trick is, and this will come as no suprise to the 911 crowd, to know what you want, know the sublte differences between a good used car, err watch, and a rip off.
Also if you stick with buyers with a good rep, you can't go wrong. I have had only a couple of problems, usually due to shipping, and the vendor each time offered a prompt solution. Your client rating in a digital age is your bread and butter.
any one doubts this go read the posts on Motor meister...

Sorry but WRONG!

I have a couple of replica watches. When I go to "interesting places" like Lagos Nigeria or Moscow you really think I am going to wear a real Rolex on my arm?

I take a replica and if someone wants to steal it, they can have it and I am not risking something that I might be tempted to kill some thief over...

I've traveled to less than safe areas-I leave my good watches at home, why wear a fake?

BeyGon 02-05-2010 08:03 PM

Why not just wear a timex, nobody will try to rob you for that, you want to get robbed cause someone thinks you are wearing a Rolex?
