There was a timex ad in the 60's which explained this. Mostly because it frames the maker's name nicely, but also to avoid taking a picture when the hands are lined up, giving the appearance that the watch has only one hand!
So if you have to position the hands before the photoshoot, you might as well position them nicely so the appearance is balanced and while you are at it, frame the makers name.
