First the frames on Tacomas
Next unintended acceleration Then brake trouble in the Prius With a dose of frame issues in the Tundra Toyota has serious quality contol issues, and I do not believe they are mere victims of their subcontractors.

Yes, but at least they are not American cars.

I have had fun teasing a friend of mine. He is a big fan of Toyota. He has bought dozens of them over the years.

Steve Jobs just harpooned them. Said that his Prius has had brake problems for a long time. Did not help their reputation any...

I find it interesting that most of Toyota's problems have stemmed from using American suppliers.

I don't believe anyone would give GM, Ford, Chrysler, Hundai, Kia, Audi... a pass because they produced an automobile with subassemblies of inferior quality regardless of whether they were supplied by outside vendors. I agree that Toyota has done a remarkably fine job caring for their customers, especially Tacoma customers. That does not solve their quality control problem. They are building and selling vehicles with significant quality issues.

What's now really scary is the wonderment of what other car companies these American suppliers have been supplying.

Who in there right minds would design a "fly-by-wire" breaking system? I understand that you need to engage the motor breaking first. But for god's sake, have the break connect to the actual master cylinder after a certain amount of travel.

First, Dana built the frames to Toyota's spec. Dana supplies frames (and many other 'heavy' components) to Ford, GM, Chrysler, Freightliner, Kenworth, etc, etc. Ever hear of ANY other Dana-built frame having the same issues? Did they ONLY screw up Toyota's frames as part of some conspiracy!? Second, Toyota was LEGALLY FORCED to replace the frames "at no charge", that's what a recall is all about. And in most cases they need to replace the bushings to do so. They did nothing out of the goodness of their hearts. And it took them plenty of time to admit fault. Third, while everyone is sooooo impressed by Toyota's repurchase offers on the trucks they didn't fix, it was likely the cheapest route overall. Replacing a frame is, on average, a $10K fix for Toyota. Some much higher. So buying it back then getting something for salvage could be a better deal for Toyota. |

And I suppose the horrid sludge issues of ten years ago were all U.S. suppliers? Nope, not at all. That was all Toyota. |
