Sniper's little spoon project progress report

Sniper,

The hardened 4140 dovetail piece as well as the aluminum adapter plate are pretty much done. I still need to make 4 custom .120" locater pins and press them into the adapter plate and I also need to blacken the aluminum (will have to wait till Monday as the alumablack is still at work). I put it on (minus the pins) just to test fit and it looks pretty decent.

Hope these pics will tide you over until I can ship it out next week.

Aluminum bar stock and a piece of 4140 prehard.

After removing your rear sight and doing some measuring and sketching...time to start cutting the dovetail piece.

Fits nice and snug

Next the aluminum is sized up and the holes centerdrilled.

Drilling done.... still need to put a radius on the ends of the aluminum (will have to take to work to do on CNC mill) and tap holes.

Time for a test fitting.... Perfect!

Well Sniper, the little project is done. The homemade "dowel pins" were pressed in place and they hold the optic perfectly. I spoke with a machinist from work and he claimed our Alumablack stuff at work is old and no good so I simply squirted the adapter plate with a shot of flat black paint.

I am embarrassed to say this little project took me about five hours to measure/design/build, but not to worry, I won't be charging you 5 hours of labor... I enjoyed tinkering with it and got to further polish my small job machining skills. (PM on the way)

"Dowel pins" are cut from #31 drill bit and pressed into plate

Screws are 5-40 thread and had to be ground to the proper length.

It all goes together nicely. Be careful not to over tighten the screws. I am still not too keen on the whole idea of dovetail mounting a red-dot on a pistol slide, but as you pointed out that is what the Burris designed for. I hope it works out for you long term.

Looks great man, thanks!

If it doesn't hold up long term i'll just get the existing sights drilled for tritium inserts(probably gonna do that anyway) and put the fastfire on my AR.

Great job, thanks!

I looked at a Heckler & Koch, Kimber, Wilson Combat(too expensive), bought Kimber, but I sure like that HK!

According to a Pelican you can get P7's online for under $600.00

If so- steal of the century!

Tim, this red dot in the sight dovetail/riding on the slide trend is becoming increasingly common now. Many of the top open class shooters are using them.

Look at this fking beast:

I snagged a P7 online with fewer than 1k rounds through it, box, accessories, 2 mags and TT holster for 650. Now I'm playing the waiting game until it gets to my local shop.

Did they make you wear a black ski mask?

Not this time, but they did for the combat commander. I paid so little for it that its laughable.
I can't wait to get my hands on this gun! Probably not going to do anything crazy like a red dot sight, but I imagine a set of those nill grips are in the future. I'm about to start making a set for my 1911 out of drift wood I found on the beach that has a really nice texture.

The beautiful part in the P7 is it doesn't need a trigger job or ambi this or extended that controls added. Just a set of grips, and night sights (i would get those if it's to be an actual defensive spoon), and you're golden.

I'm just getting the MFD mounted and getting it ported because i know i will have it forever, and i want the uberist P7 in all of HKdom. I've wanted one for 20 years. I chose this one over the M8 i had. I have my pistol.

If you like yours even 1/2 as i like mine, you'll have yours forever too!

Sniper, how are you going to conceal a P7 with such large optics on it? Or is this a range toy only? It looks like a cool project and I know P7's grow on trees at the moment. But I just couldn't bring myself to do this to one of them. They are no longer made and in a few years the supplies will dry up. Is this sight removable or interchangeable with something more low key? If I were gonna do something like this, I'd do it on a very cheap, replaceable gun.
