Inglorious Basterds...wow that sucked!
Jeebus what an awful movie!
I know i'm late to the party but am quite glad i didn't waste $20 going out to see it at the movies.

It was pretty bad, but redeemed in significant measure by the performance of Christoph Waltz IMO. It was the role of a lifetime...the charming SS officer with good taste and a sense of humor.
He's won the Golden Globe and SGA awards for it, and will also surely win an Oscar.

He was the 'jew hunter'?
That guy certainly put in a good performance. It's just the movie itself...script and Tarantino giving himself WAY too much credit...that sucked so badly. Well...maybe the meeting in the tavern scene was pretty well done. But in general i would rather have spent my time watching Back To The Future for the 10,000th time.

I may get flamed for this, but I think all of Tarantinos films are stoner films. If you fire up before watching they are brilliant. The tavern scene you mention is a fine example of almost unbearable suspense...as is the opening scene with the family beneath the floor. If you're watching these stoned (so I'm told) you'd be very close to cardiac arrest.

Waltz & the two aforementioned scenes almost make up for Pitt's character. The tension in those scenes is palpable.

Pitt as a redneck from the mountains just didn't work. The Jew Hunter was good, and well-played, but maybe overly much so.
The tavern scene was excellent. Aside from that? Aargh. I've wasted two hours of my life. Now, this may seem silly, but I was kind of bummed that they didn't even make an effort at historical accuracy. Had Hitler et al escaped at the last minute somehow, and it had merely been a massacre of 300 random relatively senior Nazis, I think it could have come off ok. You could say "Maybe that happened, and we just didn't hear about it because it wasn't huge." But the way it was played was just silly. If you're going to do historical fiction, it's best to only make up unverifiable bits. That's my $0.02, anyway. Dan

That movie put me to sleep twice. Both times PPV. First one was comped. The second time at home, just wanted to see the rest. I give up. I can't take subtitles too.

Basterds
I agree fully with Dottore, the opening scene at the farmhouse was excellent. The film overall may have been better with more Spaghetti western intros. I thought some of the actors did a great job (not Pitt) and would probably watch anything with Ms. Kruger in it.

Watched it last weekend. Very disappointed. The actor who played the "Jew Hunter" and the first scene was the whole movie, as previously mentioned.
Other than that a waste of $4.95 pay-per-view.

I never watched it, just the trailers with Brad Pitt and his hokey accent killed it for me.
but as for Tarantino, didn't he do Pulp Fiction, I thought that was great. |

Tarantino thinks he is the greatest director who ever lived. I think he's made some okay movies, but nothing great. I find his style of ever-increasing, over-the-top cartoon violence to be pretty annoying. I think he could benefit from some occasional understatement.
As for stoner movies, watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in the theater while high is freaky. The giant bats, the confusing story line... I mean, or so I've been told.

Oh thank God you all felt the same about this movie. There were parts that were brilliant, but overall, it was just odd having such diametrically opposed scenes juxtaposed.
And characters that were so over-charicaturized it was laughable, all mixed in with very real identifiable characters. It just did not jibe. My head wanted to explode. Woody Harrelson should have had Brad Pitt's part. Or maybe Matthew McCaunahey.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I will watch it on HBO and not on demand. I expect anything with Brad Pitt in it to suck anyway. He is falling in the same category as Tom Cruise. Instead of an actor getting lost in the character, you get Brad Pitt playing a part as Brad Pitt. Ok, he has an accent this time.

I liked it well enough, would have said it was 'classic Tarantino'.
What surprised me was that everyone else in the theatre loved it. Maybe you had to be there. |

I didn't hate it. I actually watched both Hitler movies back to back and the Tom Cruise one was much better.

The first 40 mins were terrible, I can't speak to the rest as it put me to sleep...just terrible.
I also hate the Kill Bills, terrible movies. I loved Pulp fiction....and Reservoir Dogs was also excellent. The guys movie chart looks like an EKG.

I thought it was good entertainment, but not at all what happened in WWII. I preferred The Dirty Dozen. At least the one is believable.
