O.K. Once and for all the bass player WAS Pino Palladino, and NOT Townsend's son. Townsend hand picked Pino as Entwistle's replacement. And yes nostatic, he IS a monster. I was knee deep in trying to figure him out, until you threw James Jamerson at me.

As far as the Who's performance, most of it was God Awful. If they did that performance under another name, in costumes, and you didn't recognise them, you would have thrown rotten produce at them. Sure, their music changed the face of Rock forever. There's no denying that. BUT, if you are going to try to put on a huge show like you did when you headlined 40 years ago, I'm going to judge THIS performance. You don't get credit, or get to rest on what you did 40 years ago. I've seen toned down, acoustic performances of some of the other big songs that translate VERY well. I would have more respect for them doing that. It would have said " Hey, we're old men, and can't do it like we used to, but we're still rockin!" What this performance said was, "We're old men trying like hell to hang on to our Glory Days, and failing." It's like watching A guy in a toupee, and gold chains hitting on 20 year olds at the beach.

The room I was in was full of hardcore music lovers. Most of us stop everything, and crank the volume when "Who Are You" "Won't Get Folled Again" and my favorite "Babba O'Reiley" comes on. We mostly looked at each other with that look of embarassment for them. More than one person said that they needed to turn Townsend's mic, and guitar off.

Some of us here REALLY need to get over ourselves. Boys, most of us aren't in the SuperBowl commercials demographics anymore. We already know what beer we like, and we aren't going to change. We probably aren't going to but a new Kia, or a new VW. Yeah some of us like Doritos, and might switch from our low sodium, low fat, low cholesterol snacks for a guilty treat once in a while.

Javadog keeps hammering about those of us with the money are who the performances are aimed at. Wrong-o my friend. There is a "re-discovering" of the old bands by people my son's age, just like we "re-discovered" what our parents listened to. The Who were there to keep these younger eyes on the tube, so the next high dollar commercial wouldn't be missed, PERIOD!

If we were the target audience, there would have been a lot of Home Mortgage, Viagra, Lipitor, and for some of us, Depends commercials on during the SuperBowl.

They are targeting the 21 - 30 year olds who don't have 20, 30 or sometimes even 40 years of brand loyalty. Deal with it.

I forgot to add, that I think the John Mayer Trio would KILL at halftime. I like it, there are some of his songs that got heavy radio rotation, and a couple of them seem to make 22 year old gal's panties just melt.

i saw the WHO in mcnichols sports arena in denver colorado only about a month or 2 before moon died.

the BEST rock and roll show i have ever seen. over the top/insane fans/insane band/insane lazer light show.

what a PARTY!

i then saw them as only rodger and pete with the present lineup, here in phx. if you closed your eyes THERE WAS NO DIFFERENCE btwn the band with moon and entwistle. and townshend was windmilling and launching himself as if he was still in his 20's.

i really liked zacks clear see-thru drum kit.

Thanks for the clarification. I was basing my assessment on appearance alone.

I don't know how old your son is but mine are 18 and 27. My kids know all of the classic rock bands; they just choose not to listen to them, for the most part. There's no "re-discovery," they've grown up with them. Kids today aren't like we are. They are looking to the future. The past is of litle interest to them. My youngest son is a drummer. He won't even listen to bands that he played non-stop 5 years ago. He's moved on.

Here's a breakdown of the demographics of a superbowl audience. The figures aren't for this year; they are just what I could find on the 'net:

GENDER

Men 61%
Women 39%

AGE

Age 18-24 12%
Age 25-34 19%
Age 35-44 23%
Age 45-54 19%
Age 55-64 12%
Age 65+ 15%

RACE

White 83%
Black/African American 12%
Asian 2%
Other race 3%
Spanish/Hispanic origin 9%

MARITAL STATUS

Married 60%
Never Married (Single) 23%
Widowed/Separated/Divorced 17%

EDUCATION

Less Than High School Graduation 8%
High School Graduate 31%
Some College (1-3 years) 37%
College Graduate+ (4 years college or more) 24%

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

Employed Full-Time (35 hours or more) 61%
White Collar 49%
Blue Collar 23%
Professional/Managerial Occupation 25%

HOUSEHOLD INCOME

Under $25,000 14%
$25,000 - $50,000 36%
$50,000 - $74,999 21%
$75,000+ 29%

If my kids were the target audience, the advertisers are in trouble. My 18-year old has no money, is still in school, skipped the whole halftime show and watched the game while doing other things on his iPhone. My 27-year old has lots of income but is so tight he squeaks when he walks. He only buys something when he can get a smoking deal on it. Period. He watched only the first half of the game, also blew off the halftime show, as did his fiancee.

My brothers and I watched the whole enchilada, start to finish, including the pre- and post-game crap, along with our wives and friends. I know this is just one sample but I'm not betting on the younger generation to carry the load. Their attention spans are just way too short.

For what it's worth, I have yet to need a home mortgage, Viagra, Lipitor, or Depends so I'll keep you in my prayers.

You are absolutely right Javadog, the universe DOES revolve around you and your sons. There is absolutely no possible way that your family is different than America as a whole. I'm sorry I forgot.

The Home mortgage, viagra, lipitor, or depends were a generalised statement of products targeted to an older crowd. Not pointed at you specificly. Sorry If I made it sound that way.

Save your prayers, I don't need or want them.

No, actually the universe revolves around Tabs, not me. Ask him, he'll tell you.

Just look at the demographics, will ya? It's a wee bit biased towards the white, adult male, with a white collar or professional job, lot's of education and a fair bit of cash. That's all I was saying.

I did figure the Depends, et al, were not focused specifically at me. Likewise, I was just poking a little fun at you. In the immortal words, spoken in the movie "Stripes," Lighten up, Francis...

Have a nice day,

THAT'S PSYCHO TO YOU!!!!!

The demographics point out what I'm trying to say exactly. The network couldn't care less about the FootBall game. They only care about viewers, and who will pay for the commercials. If they have our demographic locked up, and they know we aren't going anywhere, the advertisers are going to try to sell to one of the lower demographics. The white male, 18 - 24 years old.

The male 25-34 is almost as high as the 35-44 aged males, and they KNOW they have them locked in.

Like I said man, we are already set in our ways. We are debating this just like we would sitting in a bar with our favorite beers in front of us, eating our favorite snacks, and we got there in our most favorite brand of mundane transportation. We ain't gonna change anything in that equation. We are hopelessly locked in as far as advertisers go. Ads trying to get us to buy a Kia, are as effective as if they had ads for a free buffet at a Gay Bar. It's still Not Gonna Happen.

But there might just be a 18-24 year old gay guy that thinks a Kia fits his current life situation just fine, and he's hungry.

If the advertisers can get a hook into the young guys sitting back laughing at the two old farts *****ing at each other at the bar and ignoring that Kia commercial.............

Yep. Getting ready to start college.

Don't worry, i'm sure she'll be through with me before long. I'm pretty sure she's using me for sex. Thank god for freaky 18yo black chicks that love older white men.

+ infinity, I am a huge Who fan... but they were obviously out of practice... no big surprise seeing as they haven't toured in years... tough to do a ten minute performance, just as they were getting warmed up the show was over.
