fingpilot has me thinking? i'm not going to die right after i retire..i better not!

we talked about buying (relatively soon) a condo in taiwan. spend part of the year there, and fly back here to hunt and fish. if i am still married. or teach algebra to high school kids and retire in some eco-green home in AZ.

if i am divorced..operation "cliff in thailand" goes code red...

what are some of your dream retirements?

Guys, I have an RV, but am trying to sell it. The 100 gallon tank is $280 to fill and it goes 550 miles. Propane is $60 to fill. Insurance per year is $300ish. CA Reg is $260-ish. New regs everywhere about where you cannot park it. The thought of repairing something beyond my capabilities would end that dream.

That used to be an option, but unless you have some sort of income, I'd worry about driving myself into a hole somewhere I cannot get out of.

Sleeping under an overpass is starting to look good.

I just retired 22 Jan and my ceremony was last Saturday. We bought a house in Florida and we're moving next Friday. No bills, house paid for and with a women, my wife, whom I love dearly and no kids. I plan to do nothing or anything! We bought a beautiful home with a huge 3 car garage, one of which is called a boat garage which I plan to transform into something cool. That's the first big project. I have already lined up a sailing class and a surf fishing class the first part of March. That's for starters. My wife has never been to Key West, so we'll go there shortly after getting settled in. Her BD is 29 Mar so I will take her down there as a surprise. Probably won't write a book when we get there though. We're going to take dance lessons. I want to go back to school. We are going to travel, though I think I have been to almost every place on this earth with my career. Though some places just the airports. But we can do anything we want when we want. She will continue to work, she enjoys what she does and wants to stay in it part time. I on the other hand do not want to work. I'll join the local SpaceCoast PCA. I want to drive on the Daytona Speedway. We'll host friends and meet our neighbors and make great friends there. My wife is a great golfer and I am learning. We'll do lots of golf. And riding our bikes and walking on the beach. OMG, we are so thrilled. We will stay busy, my baby and me. Bring it on, we can handle it. I hope to find the time.

house will be paid off 3 years before i go out @ 55 on a public employee pension. so at about the time the castle is paid off i will start going max deferred comp for that three years. hope to sell my house & get out of the bay area, might even be with significant other by then

. looking to buy up north or oregon where it's cheaper for property with a LONG gravel driveway.... of course i will need a motor home & 311 should be finished by them so while cliff is summering in Thailand i will travel the country to drive every race track i can find!

Here is my plan. I will never fully stop working, but at some point I hope to work part time from home as a consultant. And I will buy a lakefront house, maybe upstate NY, or down south (TN, AL...), with a 4+ car garage. Here is how I would split my daytime: 1/3 working, 1/3 fixing old Porsches, 1/3 being on the water boating and fishing, till I die. I think it is a possible dream.

my parents sold their apartment that was close to dad's work in Taipei, then bought a condo only 20 minutes away from the airport. They go back every couple of months for his pension checks and cheap healthcare...definitely something worth thinking about. They've thought about staying there for majority of the year and just coming back to visit the kids every once in a while...i think it's just a matter of time.

Thanks Noah. Very very important to go into this healthy and then takes steps to stay that way. I had a checkup yesterday and my Doc, a great guy, made that point clear as can be. Take care of you first, before anything else.

I retired in 2004 and the transition was not particularly easy. It took a while to figure out what I wanted to do but I settled on the following. First priority is to manage finances. That is not time consuming but it does require attention. I manage our portfolio to produce a certain income level since I don't have a defined benefit plan (retirement plan). I also serve on the board of New England private company as well as some local committees involving community planning and local airport management. I ski patrol in the winter and volunteer EMT services 12 months of the year when I am in town. For leisure, I play golf in the summer, ski in the winter, hike the Adirondacks, fly my plane when the weather is good and travel when my wife wants a change of scenery. Sandwich in taking the Pcar out when the weather is nice and enjoy the company of our son and his new wife, who we really enjoy as well as spending time with friends who have common interests. It's a busy schedule. Also do some cycling and will be riding with my BIL in May from upstate NY to have him dip his foot into the Atlantic as he finishes his journey of riding across the country from his home in LA.

That's all, although we are working on finding a nice villa/home in the Sarasota area to help us get through the long Adirondack winters.

I hope to retire by 50 or 55 at the latest, only continuing to work on specific individual projects for extra "fun money" and to keep from getting bored after that. I doubt I'll ever fully "retire" as in, sit in a rocking chair all day and watch the idiot box. I can't stand sitting still. It's not in my nature - I always have to be engaged and doing SOMETHING, so I consider "retirement" as, "I have enough money to not have to work hand-to-mouth, I can survive comfortably even if I consider to pursue activities that don't necessarily yield a return on investment".

But sit around in Boca Raton with a bunch of other old people doing nothing of challenge or interest or excitement? F that. I'll enjoy life until the day the Reaper pries it from my body forcibly.

My parents are hopefully only 5-10 years from retirement. They will sell the house (which will be paid for by then) and get a much smaller apartment/condo either in another suburb or downtown Chicago. Then they will travel and spend time up in Wisconsin at the lake house. A fair amount of time would likely be spent each day managing the money.

Man, you really did get nailed by a "financial advisor", didn't you? Bottom line: Nobody, but nobody cares more about your retirement savings than you. It really pays to educate yourself on money matters and become a do it yourself guy in that area. That..and diversify.

Retirement? I spend much of my day giving you guys a hard time...

Move to the central coast of Calif and get a job as a tour guide at Hearst Castle.

That is my dream anyway.

The dream was to move to Hawaii and play in a bad lounge act... nicer weather but not sure I can swing that.

Wherever I end up I will either keep working, volunteer, or take classes... can't sit still for too long.

I'm on schedule to retire by 50. When I do, I'll coach collegiate rowing and restore one early 911 per 4 - 6 months. Travel, spend time with kids, get into politics and invent are all on the docket.

Consultant, interim CEO/CFO for small business and non-profits, driving instructor, motorcycle instructor, vintage racing, chumpcar/Lemons, motorcycle trips, cycling, yoga. I used to think I could retire early but my divorce cost me half my assets so I'll need an income well into my 60's and possibly 70's. I'll be 47 in April. That's ok, I think I'd go crazy if I had too much time off. My crappy house is paid off, I don't owe anyone any $'s, my fiance is financially independent and I have some retirement/investments left and most importantly I have a job.
