PS:

My neighbour's son is a surfer, and he's constantly heading down to Encinidas and a place called Leucidia ( sp?). He claims there are lots of decent motels near the beach for less than $100.- a night, and he also claims there are no end of good cheap eateries etc. He flies to San Diego and it's only a short bit north.

Going to San Juan, PR in a little over a week. Direct from LA to San Juan was a little over $400

Arcosanti in AZ is a charming place. You can even live there free if you do a little apprentice labor.

I brought it to the attention of a friend who recently visited it with his wife. He didn't care much for the place...but he's kinda hoity toity.

I am in Boca Raton at the moment, finishing a week of mixed business/pleasure with my wife in Miami, Marco Island & Boca Raton. It has been the coldest year down here that anyone can remember. The highest temp was 72 & that was only for 2 days. It has not been beach weather at all but it was still warmer than home. February is not a good month for guaranteed warm.

Hows the weather in Philly?
If you were a skiier you'd love it.

We have snow drifts 15'-20' tall in some places. Compared to minnesota however, i am sure it would strike you as very nice weather here.

Try and plan your flight out about 10 days, you can save about 75-80% that way. I use airtrans.com for all my flight booking needs.
