Having hell getting to sleep....

Ok here it is almost 3am.... I have to be up in about 5hrs....

I have gotten in this ugly cycle of stay up way late go to class sleep deprived and then take a nap in the afternoon.... Like today I had a lab all morning... came home ate lunch... slept all afternoon... went to my scuba class came back ate dinner and crashed again without thinking about it... fell asleep in the recliner with my laptop in my lap.

So what can I do to get back on a regular schedule.... it seems like no matter what I do I have hell going to sleep in bed anytime of night cant get comfortable and not sleepy... I don't have problems with naps b/c I am worn out when it gets to that stage.... It just seems like I am wired at night....

I have cut WAY back on caffeine... Drink mostly water now.

Read this: The 10 Biggest Sleep Problems and How to Fix Them - Page 1 - MSN Health & Fitness - Health Topics

Then get some Lunesta, or whatever the docs think works the best, without many risks.

......"went to my scuba class came back ate dinner and crashed again without thinking about it... fell asleep in the recliner ...."

Similar here, would eat dinner (6:00-7:30 PM) , fiddle around then doze off. Solved by gradually substitiuting this "early" "doze off time period" as recognition for my full nights sleep period instead. As soon as I recognized the "doze off" period starting, I would shut everything down and climb into bed, and use this time for my full night's sleep instead, (as best I could)

At first, might sleep/doze at around 8:00 PM at night, and wake/rise at around 3:30-4:30 AM at dark.
Then gradually modified this by "incrementally advancing" the "fiddling around phase" alittle more until the "doze off period" was advance to around 9:00 PM, and wake around 5:00-5:30 AM. Worked! And better prepared me for the day. So now I go to sleep "early" (not "early" anymore), and am up at 5:30 AM just before dawn. Full energy during the day, more productive, (afternoon nap much shorter needed, if at all)

(Up here bright and ready to go at 5:30 AM.)

Well, that's my personal story on this. (excuse the "wordi-ness")

add it all up. you still getting 8 hours?

Rednine11 02-24-2010 05:53 AM

I have the same problem. Dr gave me Ambien.

ODDJOB UNO 02-24-2010 08:22 AM

heres some interesting FACTOIDS................

1) einstein ran on 5hrs or less sleep a day. i run on about 5-7hrs sleep.

2) if you disrupt your cycle you can never oversleep to regain that cycle back. ie. you lost sleep you will never gain it back.

3) partying(or working at home and slamming beers) is the same. stay up late and completely waste your regular sleep cycle.

4) REM sleep is the deepest and most fullfilling. this is very elusive and i havent a clue how to attain it on a regular cycle.

5) eating late and any caffeine will assure a poor night sleep.

6) eating spicey food late will also screw thangs up.

7) when i was young i was a night person(a bat). now that i have grown up usually i am out for the count right after the headline news at 9:15 -9:30 pm and then up at 330-430am every single stinking day. once last year i slept til 730am and thats because i hammered down a 18pak of cold juans. i felt very rough that day and took a NAP!

8) they have found that people who take a 90min nap are more conducive to problem solving than juans who dont take a nap. apparently a nap allows brain to clear short term memory banks and allows better problem solving.

9) rolling over after doing the "wild thang" is a deep REM sleep, problem is some idiot moron calls you on yer phone, rings yer doorbell, garbage truck/cop car/ambulance/firetruck ALWAYS WAKES YA UP! never fails.

10) a good nights sleep is PRECIOUS!

From what I recall of Psych 101, the ideal thing to get you back on schedule is to sleep later and later each "day" by a couple hours: 3 am, 5 am, 7 am, 9 am, etc. When you get to your ideal bedtime (e.g. 10 pm) just stop.

Naps are the best - I take one every day at my desk right after lunch. When I am on the road I make sure that who I am riding with has a call planned far away after lunch so I can grab some Zzzz on the way. 20 to 40 min nap is like a good night sleep. FWIW I do dream during those naps.

ya know i never remember my dreams...................unless i eat SPICEY FOOD! name it mexican/chinese/thai/italian. anything heavy in spices i have some VERY BIZZARRO dreams. like slaying dragons/hand to hand combat with geronimo/zombeesz attacking/ flip flop all night. tear the sheets blankets off my bed and sometimes fall out of bed.

ODDJOB UNO 02-24-2010 08:49 AM

quite a few women in my bed have had fun with this fact.

Noah930 02-24-2010 09:07 AM

Will take your/their word for it.

McLovin 02-24-2010 09:15 AM

of course you can't sleep at night if you've slept all afternoon.

don't take the naps anymore.

This is a really funny blog about a woman who tapes her husband talking in his sleep.
