I broke down this year and bought the KitchenAid stand mixer I had wanted for years.
It is truly the Chuck Norris of kitchen appliances.

A hand mixer works great for a cakes and most home baked goods, HOWEVER.. if you are making ROYAL FROSTING, it takes 7 minutes, yep, count em, seven minutes..then you need a stand mixer, unless you want to hold the hand mixer for SEVEN MINUTES! Maybe a task I could of done years ago after reaching puberty (wink wink nudge nudge get what I mean eh?) but not anymore due to poor arm muscles. But I'm old so a stand mixer is my favorite. Go hit a Target, it's not only where America shops, but me too!

Most master-bakers do it by hand.

Pie crust needs a food processor and frozen butter

No. Pie crust needs Tenderflake lard (pity - only in Canada), a pastry cutter, strong hands & a rolling pin.
The big issue I have with a stand mixer is storing the damn thing. That is why I have resisted. Ian

You know, they made pies long before any kind of mixer had been invented. You need a bowl and a spoon, maybe a whisk for some things. There are a couple of other pastry tools for making pastry....or pasta, or....
My mom made the best pie crust in the world and never even saw a food processor. Mashed potatoes are best done with a ricer or food mill, not something electric that beats them into a stiff glue. We have gotten way too addicted to electricity. Just sayin' JR |

We just got a KitchenAid refurb stand mixer on the KitchenAid website. 450w higher end model for just about 50% off. Looked at other KA mixers on other sites, 450W models run to $429, we got our for $220 delivered.

I don't think mixers were invented until well after cakes were invented, so yes it can be done by hand. Same for just about any other pre-electricity food item.
