Anyone rebuilt their HYdraulic Trolley Jack?

My trolley jack will jack the car up ok but it starts sinking slowly almost as soon as you stop pumping. For that reason I only use it to get the car high enough to put blocks under it.
I'm guessing it just needs new O Rings?
I've done some searching on the net and the jacks don't look that difficult to pull apart but I see there are springs and check valves in there too.

The jack I've got is an 3T old taiwanese one which is very solid and I'd like to save it if I can.

Can anyone tell me in generic laymans terms how to rebuild one? Or do I need to post a pic of it?

Thanks

Take a look on the Garage Journal forum. There are several threads on jack rebuilding.

I've been told by several people that it is easier to buy a new one than to rebuild one. Jacks are throw away items these days.

We have a place here in town that overhauls all sorts of jacks for $75. Done in a few days and like new.

The new POS's that they sell these days are not near the quality of the old versions. Will stick with my old versions and just keep overhauling them. Glad I have 5-6 sitting around!

Like URY said most jacks are throwaway nowadays. Since you pump up OK, the balls & seats in the check valves are OK & the O ring on the pump piston is OK. The V ring on the piston holding the jack up is ptobably shot. The ID of the cylinder probably has a bad spot that tore the ring.

If you can hone the cylinder smooth the jack can be fixed with a kit from the manufacturer, the correct V rings , or a gland to replace the V ribngs with an O ring. UHMWPE is a good material for the gland since it can be split & slid over into the V ring groove & turned with close enough fit to provide a back up for an O ring.
