How safe/dangerous is Baja these days?

Anyone know Baja California and have current info? Been there lately? Thinking about driving down to Rosarito.

TIA.

Just found this from a year ago:

Go in a caravan if you go. A friend of mine went down with a group in RVs about 6 months ago and did not have any trouble. Be very careful, think about your route.

You probably won't have any trouble. But what if you do?

This topic is discussed in detail on the samba's vanagon forum. Here's a good example: It's a liitle dated (2008), but still useful info.

i am not overly paranoid but if you have to ask the question in the first place....maybe you should scratch it off your list...better safe than sorry...I need to stop watching Gangland on the history channel

I know people that just drove down to Scanlons to see the whales, they didn't have any problems, I would do it, just get around TJ as quick as you can and don't even stop close to the place. Another Mexican friend went to TJ with his wife for a weekend in their Tahoe and someone tried to steal it and then the next day followed them around, he stopped at a cop and the people disappeared.

Just ask ODDJOB to ride shotgun...you'll be fine;)

Aren't you supposed to have a passport these days?

crustychief 03-13-2010 12:07 PM

Yes. Passport required.

I know some areas around L.A. that's just as dangerous, if not more, than Baja.
Ever hear of the third world next to Wilmington?

m21sniper 03-13-2010 12:41 PM

Do you go to those places?

1D is the road. The Toll road.

A passport or passport card is required.

Yep. When my wife and/or I are in MX, we stick to toll roads most of the time. Much safer & better patrolled.

I just attended a Vanagon gathering today near Santa Cruz. I talked to at least 5guys who take their Westies down to Baja regularly, and they say it couldn't be safer. And they all have syncros and go to very remote villages. I wouldn't hesitate to take the family. I've driven it before myself, and found it very safe.

speeder 03-13-2010 09:25 PM

Thanks guys. I think that it's still perfectly safe if a little common sense is employed.

Be careful. The boogie man might get you. And whatever you do, don't go in the water...SHARKS! :D
