Gopher removal high velocity cartridges 3300-4100 Feet per second

Typical rounds include Ruger 204, 22-250, 223, 220 Swift.

Swift merciful death. It's more fun than shooting rats at the dump, my favorite childhood pastime.

Yes I am ready. Saw my first ground hog yesterday. My trigger finger started to twitch all on it's own

25-06, 22-250, 17 HMR. Some times I feel like a golfer. " Let's see that looks like a 25 iron..."

Targa,

What would one add to the glue when making laminated stocks to make the glue lines dark or black? Printer toner cartridge powder?

Hey Tim,

I've never done it, but I would think it would depend on the make up of the glue itself. Some glues can be tinted with artists acrylic, like acra glas. If it is a water based glue I would use a liquid dye like Rit. Of the two you mentioned I would go with the toner. On mine shown, there is a thin laminate of dark wood then the light wood. I don't think it is in the glue itself. The laminate planks are thin, like 1/16 inch.
The dark planks are even thinner to add the contrast you speak of.

Snipe: The Stainless fluted spoon is chambered in .308

Targa911s: Those stocks are gorgeous nothing feels better than wood. I always wanted a thumb-hole rifle stock.

Being new to this game I have a few questions So I know what I sould be acheiving on a rabbit shoot coming up in a month or so using the .223

How far are you average and long distance shots?

Are you using a range finder or do you just get used to distances after the first couple of dozen kills

55 grain projectiles are the busines or are you using really powered up light projectiles, still talking .223 here?

Being a dirty foreigner, I've never seen a ground hog. Are they a bit smaller than a rabbit? Here in NZ we have rabbits and hares.

930 thanks for the comps. yeah wood is my thing.

sniper...of course I did them. I get them semi inletted and I finish the action and barrel fitting, bedding and do all the finish work. They are pretty rough when I get them. A shadow of the finished product.

Varmint loads in .223 go all the way down to 40 grains.

The weight depends on the range. A 40gr bullet probably isnt a good choice for 500meter shooting, where the longer heavier bullets would excel.

Bill, most of my shots are 100 to 300 yards. The .17 HMR is only a 17 grain bullet but it travels REALLY fast and flat. Kinda like a laser beam out to about 150 yards. Further than that I use the .22-250 same nice flat round but a lot more distance. The .25 -06 is another really fast flat round. Basically a 30-06 necked down to a .25. It flies way too far to use around here on ground hogs.. But I use it at the range. A ground hog is a big ground squirrel I have shot them up to around 25 lbs.

i have a .257 weatherby. with 120gr nosler partitions, i have dropped mule deer out at 300 yards, easy. .25 caliber is also one of my favorites.!! love them.

i had a bunch of nosler 150gr ballistic tips. got them free. i gave a bunch to a buddy with a .308, and i loaded up my 30.06. we vaporized gophers for days. we giggled like schoolgirls.

Sniper: 308 is heavy for prairie dogs. Varmints come in many sizes, coyotes and badgers are opportunity targets at 500 + yards. We even have a 300 win mag with 168 grain Sierra match bullets for the really long stuff. Most critters aren't real spooky at 500 Yards

The Ruger .204 is impressive more economical powder wise than the 220 swift.

It does not buck the wind like the heavier 55 Grain bullets the swift fires.

Effective range is

204 Ruger 375 Yards
220 Swift 450 Yards
308 Win 700 +

Ruger 204
204 Ruger 40 gr. V-MAX 83206 3900/1351 3482/1077 3103/855 2755/674 2433/526 2133/404 -1.5 0.7 0 -4.3 -13.2 -28.1

220 swift
220 Swift 55 gr. V-MAX w/Moly 83243 3680/1654 3253/1292 2867/1003 2511/770 2183/582 1880/432 -1.5 0.9 0 -5.2 -15.9 -33.9

308 Win
308 Win 168 gr. BTHP Match w/Moly 80973 2700/2719 2503/2336 2314/1997 2133/1697 1960/1433 1797/1204 -1.5 2.0 0 -8.5 -24.7 -50.0

308 is not real flat, just predictable

My ultimate long-range varmint rifle:

It's a Ruger #1 action with a 28" Lilja barrel, chambered in .220 Swift. Standard twist for the old Swift is 1:14; this one is rifled 1:12 to better stabilize 60 grain bullets. The scope is a Leupold 6.5-20x.

My favorite load for it is a bit odd, in that I use a powder not commonly used in the Swift, Reloder 22. With the heavier bullets and longer barrel, it works wonderfully. I use either the Hornady 60 grain V-Max or the Sierra of the same weight. Velocities are in the low to mid 3,800's. Either load shoots honest 1.5"-2" groups - at 300 yards, where I keep it zeroed.
