No shizzle. There's probably some extra room in there now.

I would check out the transmission and differentials prior to spending too much on motor. Be a shame to dump a bunch of dough into a motor and discover you should have totalled the car

My A6 4.2 had a couple cams that wiped the lobes. Cams were $900 each, + followers and we were nearing $6000....plus labor! Bought a good used motor and plugged in.

If bad cams were 6k, you can expect a lot larger bill on that puppy. Pull one head to satisfy your curiosity and start looking for a new engine!

Actually, a V8 Audi S4 is more like 3847lbs. Dat's a whole lotta mass.

I'm guessing more than bent valves and scortched pistons. Bent rods - maybe even threw a rod out the side of the block. Top of 4th in an S4 has to be north of 100mph. To drop down to 1st @ 100+ mph -- man, there are a lot of fusable links down that path until something holds together. I'm surprised you can still see what resembles a motor under the hood -- unless you haven't looked there yet!

An S4 isn't worth the price of whatever it will cost to fix that motor.

That's what I was thinking. He might be lucky to be alive. I can't think of what speed I'd have to be at to redline either of my vehicles in 4th, but it would be plenty fast.

Duct tape and WD-40 is all a good mechanic needs. If it's not supposed to move and it's moving, duct tape. If it's supposed to move and it's not, WD-40.

Hopefully it didn't throw a muffler belt or puke out the halogen fluid.

Part it out.

As far as the drivetrain, it's a boat anchor.

I drove an 05 S4 and an 01 996 Carrera back to back the other weekend, and the S4 felt like a rocketship in comparison. Nice car, shame about the driver.

I think you will find the limit of the Visa card if he chooses to fix it.

I've repaired a lot of m3's that have been over reved. One in particular bent the valves so bad they were "s" shaped. Every valve was bent. After careful inspection and 24 new valves and stem seals I put it back together and it went on to live a long happy life. Perhaps the damage won't be as bad as you may think.

Of course, but how bad was it zinged? First gear @ 100+mph? We're talking 20k rpms (for a spin or two anyways) on this Audi V-8. I'm surprised that it did not explode. We're thinking that it imploded instead.

It will be interesting to hear the results when he tears it down.
