$700 for light bulbs

Quite a shopping trip yesterday, buying cases of incandescent light bulbs at home depot. Hopefully, a lifetime supply now stashed.

Why? Because, Congress, in all it's wisdom has banned their sale beginning in 2013. The fluorescents trigger Cindy's migraine headaches.

So, some here may wish to do some of their own stockpiling, some may like those twisty fluorescent things. To each his own.

This has been planned for a long time, though...

Do LEDs cause the same problem?

I understand your desire, and I'm tempted, but it also seems equally nuts.

Hell, I've replaced as many of the bulbs as possible with the CFLs. We've got about 3-4 that aren't. Those are because they are either rarely turned on (like the attic) or they are on a dimmer.

I wouldn't think so since they don't blink like a flourescent.

I think LEDs aren't quite ready for prime time.

Yes, congress passed the law quite some time back. But I've been noticing less availability of incandescent bulbs in the stores. Figured I'd better stockpile now. LED's look promising, but like said, they aren't ready for prime time..

I'm surprised you couldn't get them cheaper online someplace. Hell, you could probably buy a whole pallet of them from China if you know where to look.

I agree... sort of. In low wattage situations LEDs seem pretty good, but last I checked about 6 months ago they weren't really good at putting out the equivalent of 60-100 watts yet.

Looking forward to the prices coming down though - I like the energy savings I've seen with CFLs, but don't like the warmup delay when turning the light on.

Yeah, but what's $700 these days? 10-15 tanks of gas??

I agree, I'm eager for a reasonable LED replacement for a regular bulb.

FWIW, $119 of the total was for 8' flourescent tubes...Garage lights. I've always bought those by the case.

I've got a bunch too in reserve. I've been loading up on CFLs too (to use right now) just because they're so much more energy efficient and I'm sick of being gouged by the electric co, however the downside is they're loaded with mercury and they're all made in China. Then again, our "green initiatives" are spending millions of stimulus dollars to buy wind turbines made in China, so what the hey!

Maybe I'll add a couple of whale-oil lamps just to piss off the environmental types to go alongside my mercury-laden, Chinese-made "green" CFL bulbs.

Yup, I'd like to remove my catalytic converter and start pouring my old oil down the storm drain.

You can do those things.

But I won't be able to buy incandescent lights. I already took the florescents out of my garage because in the winter, they barely emit any light and can take several hours to warm up.

I don't think they'll ever stop telling us, we're going to have to stop listening. If you know what I mean.
