We put everything down the disposal that it can handle as we live in a condo so no compost pile. Whenever we clean out the fridge it gets a real workout chewing up leftovers, soft veggies, etc. I had to replace my disposal just last week (6 year old unit) because the housing of the "grinding chamber" cracked and was leaking water. Turns out disposals nowadays use a sort of universal twist-on attachment to the sink drain... I had the old one off and the new one wired and installed in about 15 minutes.
When I was at the Boy Scout national jamboree in 1997 they did a demo of the big disposals they had installed to handle all of the food scrap from 7 days with 25k attendees. These were big industrial ones and were designed to handle the odd fork or spoon... they demoed them by having them chew up an entire bowling ball. I was impressed!
