John Mayall
I very much enjoy blues music but had never seen Mayall live. That changed last night. My impressions?..........
Mayall's photographs lead me to believe he is ultra-serious and perhaps not always a fun personality to be around. Boy was I wrong. One word that kept coming to mind was "joyful." Joy filled. Sweet, engaging man. Very respectful of the other musicians. And yet, Mayall was obviously the Alpha-Male of the group. He is a leader, and he comes by this quality honestly. Just a terrific performance. He started a tour last night and I would recommend him to anyone. Great show. I will see him again, if he comes back to Seattle.

Back when, late 60's - early 70's, KSAN (San Francisco) was THE station, I remember some talk of Mayall being a task master & how that negatively pushed some musicians who worked closely w/him. Couldn't say chapter/verse, however -just a bit of distant info.
. I liked most of his music , especially the drum-less work. I had some of his albums ' 'Would like to see him again, for sure.

Wish he would come down under again...I saw him 20+ years ago with his Bluesbreakers. In typical fashion of "back then", he didn't hit the stage until after midnight...fantastic couple of hours of some of the best live blues I have ever seen/heard.
Don't care if it's 20 years on and we're all that much older. I would go to see him again in a heartbeat. I love blues and he knows how to deliver the goods .

I saw JM at a very small venue several years ago, promoting Spinning Coin. I was really surprised how good of shape both he and his pipes were in. HIGHLY recommended. One of the greats.

Did a show with him as an opener in FL. He was GREAT to all of us. Treated us pretty much as equals.
Now Leon Russell ....different story. Total dick. You weren't ALLOWED to talk to him. Last edited by targa911S; 11-09-2009 at 04:09 PM.. |

I've seen Mayall twice in the last decade... once at The Handlebar in Greenville, SC, and the second time at a three-day street festival here... both performances were great stuff.
At The Handlebar gig, we hung out and talked with him and his band after the show... he was very accessible... he packed his own gear, too.

Guess who's coming to my town!
We have an arts centre here that seats just short of 500 people (small town; great facility)....we get some great performers, shows etc who are often added to the arts centre calendar at short notice.
So I buy our local paper yesterday and see an ad for John Mayall...'no way' I think so I go to the arts centre website and sure enough; the great blues man is performing one night only supported by Chris Wilson. Chris Wilson I know from a great pub blues band I used to see regularly in the 80's; The Sole Twisters. So I am doubly happy .Mike hasn't seen either of these guys before - (my blues 'chasing' goes back before my time with him)...so he's in for a real treat! Can't wait - bought 2 tickets immediately ... Billy (10) not happy - now that he knows Eric Clapton, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood have all played with John Mayall he thinks we should have bought him a ticket too...tough! Mum and Dad are going to this one sans kids....yipppppppppppppppeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

The tour schedule is exhausting to read...guy is some kind of lunatic
...Supe - I'd be checking the tour dates. More have been added in the last day or so; so he might just make it back your way. |

The man is still GREAT!!!
OH....MY.....EFFEN.....GOD.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just got home....my back is gonna let me know all about this tomorrow for sure.... John Mayall sounds every bit as good as I remember him live some 25 years ago...the guy is a freak! He can still play that harmonica...god can he play! I doubt our little arts centre here has ever had the volume cranked up quite as loud either. Great band - great sound...only complaint was that the venue was just a little too 'refined' for blues...best I could do was dance in the seat lol! I wanted to be up dancing in a pub dodging spilled drinks etc...like the ol' days... Got an autographed CD before the show too and had a chat with the man himself (he was in the foyer flogging cd's and shirts; more than happy to sign stuff and chat)...humble as ever... One word...sensational! |

Wow. I've been a big Mayall fan since the late 60's. I sure envy you for making it to his performance, Lisa.
