Cutlery vs. Chopsticks?

Roughly half of the world's current population uses chopsticks, somewhat less than half uses western style silverwear, and there are a few societies where people eat with their right hands.

Given that the world is morphng towards solidarity, do you think our decendants 5 - 6 generations from now will eat with silverwear, chop sticks, their hands, or be hand fed by supermodels?

We will be eating with chopsticks, like our Eastern masters.

And they will be synthetic. The chopsticks, not the Eastern masters.

Being fed by super models is not without merit.

Fed by supermodel with chopsticks.

Eating with chopsticks require more prep in the kitchen, the food has to be cut into bite size pieces. Will also need the use of a bowl for rice, chopsticks and rice on a plate does not work.

I love chopsticks. If I could always use them, I would. To me they are fantastic, so simple and so functional.

Problem with chopsticks is that food needs to be prepared already cut up into small pieces or cut up after cooking to use them. I doubt we will toss out our culinary skills in favor of eastern cooking methods. But it is a more relaxed way of eating dinner.

Eating fried rice is an exercise that will help with your diet. By the time you finish your plate you will have taken so long you are no longer hungry.

I do it the simple way and either use the Chinese/Japanese spoon thingy or just grab a plain old western spoon like most folks around me

Chop sticks are awesome for some things but not for others. Deep frying and moving things around in the oil with chop sticks is awesome but I would not and prefer not to bother using them for steak ... just madness

Haha. Just thinking about Japan. The fried rice you have to pick up the plate and shovel it in!

Is the spoon thingy you refer to a "spork"??

Modern Japanese parents worry their kids can't use the "hashi" correctly!

BTW - the Chinese consider a knife at the table to be barbaric at best!

Never did learn chopsticks, would try and get fed up, give me a knife , fork and a table spoon.
The wife makes some traditional West Indian food that is eaten with your hands, our 10 yr. old and his buddies love it , to be able to eat with your fingers legitimatly is too cool for them

Eating rice, especially fried rice, with chopsticks is best with the cheap, square tipped wooden chopsticks that used to be more common before the round tipped bamboo became prevalent.

I used to eat heaping plates of chicken fried rice down to the last grain of rice when I lived in Japan.

Nope not a "spork" I only see those every so often at 7/11 or other convenience store that they give you when you buy a bento (lunch box) that is chop-stick aversive like curry-and-rice.

Eating fried rice with chop sticks can be done but that just seems to me a little over kill when the more convenient way is using the Chinese spoon!

just so you guys know. using chopsticks. if you have a bowl of rice (or food) never ever, "store" your chopsticks, between bites or taking a eating break by stabbing them into the rice bowl. this is considered the rudest thing you can do at the table. my mom beotched slapped me, as i kid when i did this. she can tolerate alot at the table, but not this. this resembles what most asians do at temple, when they pay respect to the passed. they take sticks of incense and jab them into bowls. the smoke sends the message to the dead (?).

just so you know. i see old chinese people gasp, when they see kids do this.
