LA area pelicans - need neighborhood advice
So I'm officially moving to LA this june/july to take a lucrative job I was recently offered. I've visited LA many times but never lived anywhere near the area.
I'll be working in Hawthorne, and I'm looking to rent a place nearby. I'd prefer no more than a 15-20 minute commute if that's possible. I'm single and not looking for anything big, but it'd be good to have a nice neighborhood. I'm working on buying a Boxster for a new DD, not looking to park it on the street kinda deal. Whats the nice areas in south-LA? any places to avoid? Mike

Mike,
I have buddies at work that live in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach, they are about the distance from Hawthorne you are talking about, they are both good spots for the single life from the stories I get from them. But South LA..... steer clear at all cost.. go west of Hawthorne nothing to the east.

Tough to beat living in the South Bay if you are going to be working in Hawthorne. Making good money, living in Manhattan Beach and commuting to Hawthorne would pretty much be heaven for a single guy (or married guy!).

Anything west of Prairie and south of Imperial in Hawthorne will be "ok" but not really advisable. There are still 'good' pockets in Hawthorne but the area really isn't the best. Avoid "South Los Angeles" or South Central as it used to be known.
You really want to be looking west of the 405. El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, parts of Gardena and Torrance are all great places. Basically, the closer to the beach, the more you'll pay.

Manhattan Beach or El Segundo. El Segundo is less expensive than Manhattan Beach but closer to LAX.

Get a place in Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach, as close to the sand as you can afford.

Agree with all of the above. Hermosa/Manhattan Beach area is pretty hard to beat.

I think that there is a confusion in terms at the beginning of this thread between the "south bay" area and South Central Los Angeles. No one who is moving here for a "lucrative job" is going to accidentally move to SC L.A.
All of the beach cities of the south bay, (Manhattan/Redondo/Hermosa), are nice by the water and expensive/crowded. Pretty much the entire inland part of the south bay sucks pretty bad, just concrete everywhere you look and crappy post-war stucco boxes for houses in row after boring row. A lot like most of the OC. It just depends on what you look for in a city. What is the job that you are coming here to do?

Are you looking for a house or a apartment? Do you want to be able to walk to the beach or is a few minute drive alright?
Do you want night life or a quite neighborhood? Manhattan/Redondo/Hermosa are great but lots of money and parking on the weekends is near impossible for guests. Don't even consider a place West of Sep. that doesn't have your own parking spot. Steve

If you stay in the beach area you can walk everyplace you want in the evenings.
Worth the extra just so you don't have to drive around. the girls you meet can walk home with you. |

I live in El Segundo (as does Pelican themselves).
Good 'commute' to Hawthorne.

Like other have said, stay as far west as possible. The closer to the ocean, the nicer the neighborhoods. And the prettier the women. Or guys, if you're into that. The Boxster is a fairly common DD in LA. Good for keeping used car prices down.

Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey are also nice but spendy and close to LAX (noise and traffic). If you are looking for a social life then you probably want to be near the beach whereas for more of a quiet family neighborhood and larger abode, someplace like Westchester or Torrance could work.
Lots of options but many are going to be very spendy, esp. compared to MO. As in $1500-3500/month for rent for 2 bedrooms. You probably already knew that.

Mike-
Avoid the quadrant between the the 110, 91, 10, and 710 at dusk. You'll find Compton, Watts, and Athens in this area. The section north of the 105 isn't too rough a mile up but you sure dont want to grab fuel there at night. I would say 99% of the population in these areas are latino or african american. I wasn't gonna post but you work close enough to what i consider the worst spots in Metropolitain Los Angeles. I say this earnestly as an LA native and a manufac agent who drives 80-120miles around LA daily. Welcome to the jungle! YouTube - Guns N Roses - Welcome to the jungle

Torrance would be my first choice. I love the beach or should I say closer to it, but it isn't necessary due to the higher traffic and lack of parking. Living here isn't a place you can do without a car, so parking is something you should factor in when looking for a place to live. When we go out to see friends, I am always thinking about parking. If parking is too difficult, then they can go without me. The bus "ain't" cutting it "Round here". El Segundo would be my second choice. Palos Verdes would be lovely, but also $$$$.
