what would the conditions have to be like for a space voyager to see those finger like protrusions on the surface of a planet he was orbiting???

It depends on alot of things... if it is a Borate based system or a Guar. If you lower the pH, it will got from pseudoplastic to thixotropic...

I have absolutely no clue. I suspect you'd want molten lava on the surface, but I'm not sure what would cause the lava to form the protrusions.

it's the default, whatever that is...


yup - you might want lava and also some force on it (like in your vids)

but, if you had the right fluid properties, and the right force... maybe you could do it with something on a planet far from its star - say witht he fluid being liquid methane

I suppose that someone, somewhere has cooked up a non-dimensional group for this...
