At a dinner party, one of the (married) women mentioned in an offhand way how she thinks about driving into the river sometimes when she's on Marine Drive. Lots of other people (mostly the women) said they do the same thing. That was an eye opener.

I don't do that, but I do think of hypothetical scenarios: What would be the least messy, least painful, etc. . .,

I also think of my dad, now a permanent invalid in a nursing home and I tell myself no way. Electronic Morphine drip, please. I'll do the rest.

(This is a very cathartic thread, too - thanks!)

Tyler Durden (Fight Club):

"God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy schitt we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

+1...wow, a hottie singer. Probably the reason for the encore requests.

The urge described isn't all that odd, super...

Agreed. Not that unusual at all.

Woody Allen even wrote about it and used a Targa as a prop...

When your dead you feel no pain...Sucicide is the ultimate escape of not being able to face your feelings or yourself...or loosely your circumstances...consequences of your actions.

The fear of heights and suicide....is your fear of being out of control.

What people don't realize is that we control NOTHING...it is only an illusion that we control anything including your emotions. The more we try to control the more brittle we become and are liable to snap when under pressure. One might say the greater the control the greater the snap, as the floodgates are suddenly opened. The idea is to let yourself feel whatever it is that you feel as you feel it..

Paradoxily the less one trys to control themselves the more control they have over their actions. That is why I am totally out of control..and Mother keeps on telling me so...

What it boils down to is that each one of us is a unique indvdual with feelings, likes and dislikes. If you are feeling something you should honor that feeling, there is a good reason for it. Maybe one should just try and discover the reason or circumstances for it.

Well, if I was nostatic, I know what I'd be thinking about while standing behind that hot singer...

(edit) Something that would also be hazardous to my well being if thought turned to action.

An example:

If someone comes and steps on your toe..you feel pain and say,"OUCH."

That person turns and says, "I am sorry..."

You will say, "Thats Ok." and maybe "don't do it again, be more carefull cause it hurts."

The person turns and says I am sorry...and then does it again...You get angry because the guy lied to you..for a variety of possible reasons and is dismissing you.

The tells you to go fk off...you get angry because he has dismissed your feeling of pain and not caring about your feelings.

He says, I am sorry and you still get angry...then you are not really angry with him, because he has tried to make amends...you are angry with something else and are venting at him..

The actual transgression in this case is minor, and it the dismissal of ones feeling or of oneself that is the primary cause of anger and or emotion.

I thought the hot singer was Nostatic. You telling me Nostatic is a dude? Now I feel kind of icky.

I see a distinction between wanting to off yourself and the urge to jump off a cliff - two different things entirely.

In my many years of firefighting, I've come across some fairly grusome endings to peoples lives. One way I know I definately dont want to die is by burning to death. But yeah I guess at times ive wondered what it would be like to go a certain way after witnessing the aftermath of an incident. Such as driving into a tree at 90mph. Or driving into a lake. Or head on into a tractor trailer.
I have to admit that Ive had the same thoughts as Supe at times. But not in a suicidal way. Just the fact that it would be so easy to do. What would it be like to actually just say fuch it and take the step off.
I seen people jump during the WTC attack. Thats a loooong time to think about things on the way down. Sure , those people were pretty much forced to do it. But to just step off a ledge or any other high spot, I guess would take a certain rush of adrenelin to do. ( I've skydived, but thats different).

Like I posted in the other thread. My stepdaughter comes across some inventive suicides as an investigator with the medical examiner. Some are real easy painless, others are extremely painful and messy. Most are your standard hangings, self inflicted gunshots, etc, etc... ALOT of jumpers. But I still cant understand what would drive someone to that extreme. especially the younger ones. I could I guess, but I just cant imagine those last few seconds before the actual act.

I could never, I'm a wuss...

How about the urge to be pushed off a cliff?

Yes, our singer is a hottie. Better yet, she can seriously sing. She was in an all-female Led Zeppelin cover band before she joined our funk thang

well, i hate heights. i mean i really hate heights. so i took flying lessons. then, about when i had all my hours and about 120 landings, i realized that the reason i was flying was because it scared the bejesus out of me. so i quit.

i stay far away from ledges. if there is a railing, i am fine. if not, i get to the edge and i get really dizzy. scares the crap outta me.

that said, i often wonder, as i am riding jezebel at 100+, what it would be like to just auger into the median or run her straight off the road. it never occurs to me to do it, it is just something to think about, i guess.

You have a monkey jumping brain.

I was wondering if anybody has had a frightful impulse to jump off something while you were fairly high up in the air. I've encountered this phenomena many times and so have my friends, but it is difficult to explain the concept in any search engine and come up with adequate references. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Intrusive thoughts?

Impulse to Jump Off Heights? - SciForums.com

There's at least one interesting theory about this:

The human brain is an overlay of recent (last few million years) capacities and capabilities on top of the old, ancestral mammal brain.

That old brain dates back to when we were monkeys in trees. We were small, with grasping feet and excellent agility. We had balancing tails. We could leap through twenty vertical feet of air and catch a branch with one foot, easily. We did it for play. We lived in these trees, high off the ground, in safety.

The adaptations to our present weight and grounded physiology came later. They are instinctive, but they are overlaid on the older reflexes.

So what we experience is a conversation between two parts of our brain. The one is saying "Whee ! last one to the girder down there is a rotten egg". The other is saying " Aagh ! don't ! you'll kill us all, what are you crazy ?"

I like the theory. No evidence for it, though.
Interesting thread in that Sci_Fi forum, in the end I would not worry about it.

If you feel this need to purge these feelings from your system, you may want to take up skydiving.

Even if that suggestion was sarcastic/in jest, it is a good one IMO.

Jim-

Call Kapowsin and sign up for a tandem skydive. Just do it. You will know as soon as you land whether it is something for you or not. If you didn't like it at least you will know, and can say you've at least done it once. If you literally can't get the grin off of your face, go back and sign up for the static line or AFF course.

Blue skies.

I like to look down from tall heights, but in a sadistic kind of way. I know it will hurt me if I jump, but it thrills me.

Reading all the posts, it looks like a lot of have had suicidal thoughts in common. To what degree is and why is the difference. I'd be too chicken to do it in a violent way. Something along the lines of an overdose or a gas would be more peaceful I'm guessing. No fuss. No muss.

I don't understand why somebody would do it on impulse (like he/she broke up with me) or as a young person when they have so much to live for, but when you have lived for years/decades with some kind of issue that wears you down and/or makes your life unbearable, then it seems like plausible.

Been there, DIDN'T do that.

There was a period in my life where I shouldn't have been near tall buildings, cliffs, etc.

Those feelings are gone although they tried to come back when I got laid off last year. Lucky for me, my wife saw it and set me straight again.

Supe-you really should talk to someone about this. Even just to get it out.

Right with you Supe. My thing is table saws, fan blades, things like that. I'm kinda drawn to them, and have to really focus on NOT doing anything.

Todd, is see frets. I thought you were fretless only. When I try to impersonate Pino, it usually doesn't end too well. He's just a monster.
