Yep, my '88 is nothing but a road car. I won't even disappoint myself at a track. I don't trust the car. Maybe I should have kept the Ragamuffin.

Maybe I should have kept my first wife, too. ;) :D

Milt, I've driven the stock heavy Carreras and can tell you that with a couple hundred pounds removed, some light suspension work, and a performance oriented alignment, these cars come alive. My black '84 Cab drives NOTHING like a stock heavy Carrera. It's light on its toes and quick. You should drive it one of these days.

Pull some weight out of that car, Milt.

Milt, I miss the ragamuff. I don't care if it's a thread hijack, but can you please post a pic. She was a beauty.

The ZR1, and even the 911 Turbo, are meant to be fast touring cars, not sports cars. Seriously, that's their mission according to both GM and Porsche.
If you're looking for a street-legal production track car, it would be the 911 GT3 and the Z06 Carbon
Still, the GT3 weighs 3075 and makes 415hp/300ft-lb
And the Z06 Carbon weighs 3125 lbs and makes 505hp/470ft-lb

The days of a sports car meeting any legal standards (DOT, NHTSA, EPA) and being <2500 lbs are long gone
But you can strip it all out of a modern car if you're just looking for a track car :)

Interesting...

The original post was by and American... on an American BBS... bemoaning that an American car built in America out performs a similar German automobile.

I love all types of cars, German, American, Italian, English, Japanese...

Someone should tell Lotus that!?!

My feeling is that the OP's "sad" comment was meant with regard to being a Porsche fan, not being anti-American. Most of us here have a favorite car brand, in a similar sense as most of us root for certain sports teams. As such, Those of us who are Porsche fans root for our "team" and love to hate our biggest competitor - Corvette. I personally admire the Corvette, but I do find it sad that Porsche seems to be getting schooled by the Corvette in most areas.

I know alot of you guys hate ricers, but credit where its due:Honda's S2000 240hp out of 2.0 with a 8,800 redline and 11:1 compression..

I drove one at Streets of Willow Springs! I thought that it would be a great car for that track. (It's a small tight track)

The car was bogged down in third or strung out in second on 70% of the track.

If it came in a 7spd gearbox it might of had the right cog.

If you got it out of it's hp range it was a turd. 1k to 6.5k it was gutless as no other car I ever drove. From 6,500 to 8,800 it's FUN

Just got back from a day at the Oregon coast with my bride...the fun stretch was between Philomath, OR and Waldport OR on Hwy. 34...aka the Alsea Highway...so called after the river ithe road follows as the river snakes it's way through the Oregon Coast range.

I drove this stretch as quickly if not more quickly than I did in the old '72 911S...but in a lot more comfort.

I drove it both ways in my cheap Mustang Bullitt... Traffic was light. I'm content.

Off to bed now...a car sorely needs some serious cleaning...:) Maybe tomorrow...or the next day. Hell, it's only a Ford.

I rather like my '01 911/996 C4 with its LS400 class interior and riding comfort.

My 911 has no working AC, a barely working heating system, a radio that may work (I don't know, I've never turned it on I'd rather listen to my car.) It sits in the garage next to a BMW 535 with the auto nose wiper and EFSR (emergency fart smell remover). Even with twin turbos, DGI, 300 hp, iDrive and the really super duper bells and whistles of the Bimmer, we fight over who gets to drive the interior-climate-impaired Porsche.

Culture Clash - Article - Road and Track

I worked for GM 25 years ago and I said those same words. Times have changed. There might be a GM car in my family for the first time since my dad bought a 52 Chevy sedan in'55.

austin552 05-08-2010 03:34 AM

Where will these cars be in 30 years?

Chocaholic 05-08-2010 04:32 AM

Why does that matter??? The thread was a comparo between a NEW VW 911 Turbo (that's the reality boys) and NEW GM Corvette (a GM product since 1953 I believe).

Plenty of 40 and 50 year old Corvettes on the road too. Ever go to a classic car show? Ever watch Barrett Jackson?

But the likelyhood of a 2010 Corvette being on the road in 30 years is no different than a 2010 911 Turbo.

scottmandue 05-08-2010 07:02 AM

I didn't mean to imply that the OP was American bashing... just trying to point out the irony.

I am probably the opposite of most people here... back in the 70's I was a big corvette fan... and those mean ol Porsche's beat them up on the track.

Then the 944 came and all the American car magazines raved about them being the best handling cars in the world. Ten years later I could afford to buy one and became a Porsche fan (even though I know "it is not a real Porsche" :p )

Now my next car may be a 996 for the same reason I got the 944, you can get one for a fraction of the original price.

However now there is the V6 Mustang... same gas mileage as my Hyundai and most likely a lot more fun to drive!

Maybe I should have said, "mainstream" or "liveable"

Of course, the Elise was here by EXEMPTION as it did not meet US Federal standards.

kaisen 05-08-2010 07:09 AM

With the Mustang talk in this thread, it's the same sentiment.
The 2011 Mustang 5.0 is faster than many old-world sports coupes.... and for a lot less money

Porsche-O-Phile 05-08-2010 08:18 AM

I miss my old 5.0 Mustang at times, but as with my sentiments regarding the Corvette, I won't buy one - good/fun though it may be - just because I don't want to support the UAW and its leeches.

In any given price market, there are a number of very good choices these days. Buying new is crazy anyway - buy something 3-4 years old, you'll get way more bang for your buck.

The Camry hybrids usually come in at around 3700 lbs. Your Targa weighs more than that? Is that with or without you in the driver's seat?

Just for what it's WORTH...........

Just stopped by to look around at the Chevy dealer, who happens to be the largest Vette dealer on the west coast (so they say). 35 new vettes on the lot and the place was crazy busy with people actually buying cars and trucks!

The deal.... 2010 Vettes with 3LT options, 425 (?) HP $46,900 with 0% finance.
That's alot of bang for the buck, but NO I didn't bring one home!
