Need contractor help building an awning...
I can weld and I can paint but I've never done a lot of wood working. I want to build a free standing awning over my back deck. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to start this project? Where would I get plans etc? I have most tools needed for the job. I also may do a metal roof instead of a shingle type roof.

You might do an online search, but may have to settle for something like a garage to base your plans on, since all you want are the four colmuns, band and rafters. Those plans and a framing book will help you.
Another idea is to pay a Framer or misc carpenter to do the basics to get you started. You'll need to secure it either by pouring some 4x or such in concrete, strapping it or a Simpson Tie Down embedded in the footer your 4x can be secured to. |

Talk to the city first - most likely that will require structural calculations and a permit.
A GC should be able to handle this for you (or architect/engineer if you prefer) but best to be an informed owner and know exactly what's required before you go shopping for someone to build it.
