See my post above about re-connecting with a family member who now lives in New Zealand? Could not have done that without facebook, no way.

If someone want to be a hermit then thats fine, but I have far too many friends and family that I have lost touch with over the years "before the internet" came along and gave us email.

The younger people who were growing up as the internet and email came along do not have this issue, but someone my age (in my 50's) grew up, went to school (several times) and moved around the world a lot before this happened. I just got an email from my old dispatcher in Frankfurt Germany talking about my Dentist in Berlin Germany who was in touch with a friend who is in Moscow. All through facebook.

As I said, if someone wants to be a hermit then have fun but its not for me...

Not sure that I'm a "hermit." I'm busy most every night, have multiple gigs and rehearsals every week, go to events, etc. And somehow magically that is all possible without FB. ;)

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not so much into my past network of friends. Those that I wanted to keep in touch with I have. But I didn't live all over the world...

I don't post 'sensitive' info about myself.

All of my pictures are there for all to see.
I have nothing to hide.

I'd be curious what you can see, of my profile, if you are not one of my FB friends?

When I'm home, at my desk, I like to have FB open.
I like the updates from all my contacts.
I find it interesting, entertaining and humorous.

I don't use an internet phone, so I avoid the distraction whenever I am away from home.

"I see a difference between "identifying" information and "personal" information. Here on PPOT we post personal information, but usually not identifying information, and this seems okay.

It seems like you could do the same, by having two accounts on FB.

Account A has your real name and enough identifying information to allow people to find and contact you (home town, etc). But nothing more.

Account B has a false name and no identifying information. Here is where you post personal information - pictures, likes, kids, what you're doing, etc. But nothing that allows you to be identified.

Critiques please. Would this work? I'm thinking of trying this.
"

If you're not interested in enabling people to contact you, then you'd skip account A. Essentially, simply participate in FB under a pseudonym.

For music stuff, sure. But for work that really won't work. You pretty much have to have your real name there (which is what I had, even though my account was under my nostatic pseudonym)

I canceled my FB acct about a week after I opened it. A bunch of people I could care less about in HS wanted to be friends and I was like whatever I have better things to do with my time.... I do have a bus acct that doesn't get updated very often because of lack of participation by the wife.

You can do this yourself. Which browser do you use? If you use Firefox on a regular basis, then open an IE (or Google Chrome) browser that you have not used with FB and see what pops up.

The browser has the cookies that identify's yourself as you and when you go to the same homepage using a different browser it does not know its you and the public version of the page comes up.

Trekkor, you can see pretty much everything, photos, wall, info, etc
