I pulled the Facebook plug today

Got an email from a co-worker who asked me about a group that I evidently recommended to him. Problem is I didn't recommend anything...seems Facebook did all on its own. That was enough for me - I deleted my account. I hear there is an "official" quit FB day on 31May. I guess I just was ahead of the curve...

You're a Rennaisance Poopyhead now.

nostatic 05-19-2010 10:47 PM

That's Dr. Renaissance Poopyhead to you.

now if i could just quit this place i might get something done...

Geronimo '74 05-19-2010 10:47 PM

Good on you, FB is the devil.
I never even joined and even now my mailbox is full of people inviting me to join.
Not gonna happen. (I prefer real life friends and I am not interested in what some bozo I went to kindergarten with is doing this weekend....)

I actually had zero childhood or school friends on FB. It was all work colleagues and/or musicians and a few friends. It was useful for the interesting links to things that would get posted (as is this place), but the lack of control that you have over your information and your "network" is just ridiculous. And they are getting worse, not better...

Wanda Sykes was on Leno's old 10:00 show one night and he was asking her if she did Facebook. One of the things she said about it was, "If I didn't want to talk to you in fifth grade, what the h3ll makes you think I want to talk to you now?"

Geronimo '74 05-19-2010 10:53 PM

And even if I talked to you in fifth grade, chances are I won't anymore...

You can bet your last dollar that your account isn't even really deleted. They just took it offline, but it is still there.
I've heard that it can be really difficult to cut them loose completely, they cling on you like stink on a turd.

Is this FB anonymous thread?

Porsche-O-Phile 05-19-2010 11:19 PM

I have no use whatsoever for facebook and have never been on it. No interest.

If people from the past aren't still in touch with me, there's probably a reason. I have absolutely zero desire to relive my high school years (which pretty much sucked). I'll focus on the here and now and the people who are important to me today, thank you very much. And I can do it without facebook and its associated magnet-for-identity-theft format.

Also, FWIW don't you think that anyone who would spend hours of their time blabbing about themselves to have a wee bit of a narcissism problem? Cause or effect with respect to today's very real "me first - nobody else matters" attitude among kids (and some adults)?

Isn't Pelican enough for our social networking needs?

tabs 05-20-2010 02:40 AM

U mean I can reach out and touch MORE people?

Are you sure it wasn't one of those FB "suggestions" on the side.... One of those join this or that that tells which of your friends already have...

Those suggestions are freaking annoying...

Jagshund 05-20-2010 05:22 AM

I'll admit it- I have an account there. But only to post pics of the cars so that people I know who don't visit Pelican don't constantly bug me about it. And I hate sending mass emails, so that's out.

I have never updated a status or any of that bs . . . pretty much using it as a file sharing site. I'd like to think I'm one of the last holdouts against this ridiculous tweeting business . . .

Linkedin. It's like facebook without all the fluffy cloud and baby bunny graphics, teeny-boppers and pedphiles. Just keep the head-hunters at bay (don't accept their invitation to be networked), and it is all good.

Has anyone heard the theory that FB is a CIA creation to gather intel on all Americans?

I use it for friends only, not business, and I don't post there too much. I have gotten back in touch with several really old friends, with whom I had lost touch long before the Internet was around.

sc_rufctr 05-20-2010 06:00 AM

I've been thinking about pulling the plug to.

I can't get over how so many people seem to spend most evenings playing "Farm Ville" or "Mob Wars".

Same here and have used it to track down friends that I have not heard from in years. As well old HS buddies that I have lost touch with and so on...

Agree about the game playing and delete everyone of those and the other invites...

porsche4life 05-20-2010 06:04 AM

Rick.... You got your tinfoil hat handy? You keep saying things like that you better have it on.

stealthn 05-20-2010 06:05 AM

ahead of the curve???

What does that make me who thinks it's a stupid college prank that turned into a dangerous social experiment?
