We used to do one hour for every hour of sunlight, and did that for many years. The last couple of years I have knocked it down to keeping the pool pump on 3 hours a day and thats it. It starts at just before 6 and turns off right before 9 am, before the price for electricity goes up.

I do four tabs of chlorine in the pool a week and have done this for years. Checks with the pool place show good. Dump some "extras" in from time to time but so far (and I have been here 10 years now) its doing fine.
