Kevin Costner to the rescue?

Interesting.

Apparently he has spent $24 million developing this.

Well done Mr Costner.

Maybe some other aging Hollywood stars should take a leaf out of his book.

This seems like a workable idea. Good luck, Kevin.

Why this line: "Though reporters largely greeted his ideas with snickers" ? WTF? Why the constant Costner bashing from the press?

God, I would never want to be famous. For an unlucky few, Lyle Lovett springs to mind, the fourth estate decides to brand you and there is no way to ever get out from under the stigma.

Other famous people can do no wrong, despite serious career missteps. (What was that John Travolta movie where he wore a Ghengis Khan costume?)

For what it's worth, despite what the press want me to believe, I thought Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and Tin Cup were totally enjoyable movies, lighthearted stories with happy endings. WaterWorld was OK, for what it was, never saw The Postman. Costner is not Sir Lawrence Olivier, but he's never said he was. He's just a movie actor, that tries to do more than the average hack. I'm not a fanboy, just tired of the press telling me what to think.

I actually thought that was a decent movie. I've seen it a couple times.

A Hollywood type who actually gives a crap? I'm impressed. It's usually just posturing. Glad to hear Mr. Costner is one of the good guys.

I hope it works and he makes a bundle. I'm not a big fan although some of his ovies have been entertaining.

The pros haven't done squat, in fact it's very disappointing to see the lack of readiness, skill and knowledge directed at solving this catastrophe.

Federal govt hasn't done shlt, companies have failed terribly, it's an embarrassment to our country.

Good for Kevin Costner and Good for the World.

And, if he gets really rich from his invention and helps in getting the gulf cleaned up, I think it's only fair that we redistribute his wealth.

Costner's high-speed centrifuge machine has a Los Angeles-perfect name: "Ocean Therapy."

Placed on a barge, it sucks in large quantities of polluted water, separates out the oil and spits back 97% clean water.

"It's like a big vacuum cleaner," said Costner's business partner, Louisiana trial lawyer John Houghtaling.

"The machines are basically sophisticated centrifuge devices that can handle a huge volume of water," he said.

The Q is, how fast and how efficiently. I mean, even just burning the slick 'works.' ...for that matter, just letting mother nature break it down 'works' too.

Anyway, just one machine... How do they feed the machine? ...lots of skimmer booms, I suppose.

BP seems to think it is worth trying.

of course, they first have to collect the oil with booms, etc. as Island points out

a lot of it is sub-surface, partly due to the dispersants being injected at the "outfall"

if they don't get it stopped before hurricane season...

Good for him - not an invention though, prior art IMO but who cares? This guy is showing a nut bag unlike guys like Brad (pussy) Pitt, Sean (creepy) Penn and Oprah (crack ho) Winfrey who have more money that God and are the best examples of Chadonney Liberals there are!

More intelligent reporting: "Costner has 300 of his Ocean Therapy machines in various sizes. The largest, at 21/2 tons, is able to clean water at a rate of 200 gallons a minute - faster than the well is leaking, Houghtaling noted."

You would think the writer could distinguish between gallons of polluted water and gallons of oil coming from the sea floor.

Centrifuges have been around for ages. But they are good for removing large amount of oil from water. Old technology wrapped up in a new form. We need all the help we can get, so if it works just a little its more than what is being done now

Well, I know it will work, I guess I really should say I hope it is effective and will do some good...

Well, it really doesn't need to work.

Maybe you haven't heard the good news, but President Obama has the perfect solution. You see he "has his his heel on the throat of BP."

so, really, what else needs to be done?

to paraphrase another prez... you're doing a heal of a job. Barry!
