Nice! Your pajamas need ironing though.

I can hook you up with a solid American swordmaker if you're interested in a handforged jian made in the good ol' USA.

Maybe it is no cold steel katana,

but it was enough for you to slay Dr. Evil with and steal his outfit.

Your clothes had been out of the wrapper all of 10 minutes at that point, huh?

I envy you. I wish I had my life and time worked out well enough to go back to Aikido. I suspect it's more about me and my time management than anything else. I don't see you having that much free time. You sound like a busy fella what with the teaching, govt consulting, dating, hangin' with the boy, etc....

Nice, now I'm envious and a slacker.

I have a tai chi sword as well. An elegant weapon, for a more civilized time.

Sorry, I don't own an iron and haven't dry cleaned them yet

I need to buy a sword (that one was borrowed), but frankly I need lightweight. The first time I switched from a wood practice sword to a competition one my tendonitis came back with a vengeance.

As for busy schedule, it just depends on how much sleep you need and how much "free time" you're willing to give up. With work I'm sort of "on call" 24/7. Right now things are pretty much jam-packed:

Mon - tai chi class
Tue - have the boy, he has piano lesson
Wed - tai chi class
Thu - have the boy, he has drum lesson
Fri - alternating having the boy
Sat - alternating having the boy, usually two nursing home gigs
Sun - alternating having the boy, funk band rehearsal

Luckily I have an understanding g/f...

Hm. Was the competition one steel? My friend can do anything from "flexi-flyer" to "splitting maul" when it comes to steel. He might even be able to do something in titanium if you a$k nicely.

In the iaido world we use something called an "iaito" or "mogito" (depending on who you ask). Typically made from a beryllium/zinc alloy. Won't hold an edge and is about 70% the weight of a similarly-proportioned steel blade. That is, until we hit shodan, and then we're expected to use the real thing. Maybe there are "practice" jian available in this material?

This was steel, and probably about 2lbs. The wushu competitors use these swords that are like aluminum foil - really light and make noise when you thrust them. The one I was using was stiff and had a sharp point (but no edge). I'm doing various tai chi sword forms, both straight and broadsword.

Titanium would be sweet

You can't simply use a (fencing) foil? Light, balanced for one-handed, inexpensive, can be shortened. I don't know anything about this sort of martial art but I assume you're not actually sticking another person with the implement.

no, you have to use the "correct" weapon. Straight sword for straight sword forms, broadsword for broadsword forms, daggers for that form, Mulan fan for that form (which is totally cool). Plus part of the form is how the weapon balances and a foil wouldn't feel the same. And it certainly wouldn't look as good, and that is a big part of it (especially in wushu).

2 lbs. is quite a bit for a one-hander. Some of the lighter blades the smaller guys in my dojo use are under 1000g, and most techniques are 2-handed. As the resident 6'2" 220lb goon I unfortunately have to use something in the 1500-1700 range.

BTW, post more pics like this, please:

Lots of fake Chi stuff out there. The cold steel J-stuff is a poor copy of the real thing, sorry snipe.

Good to get out and just do MA. I am getting back to Kendo after some absence due to kids and work. And as one of my sensei said to a fella that told him that he could not come to practice (not me)...."If Kendo could help you with your life's priorities, then it is a good thing."
