Why do pics not show up?

I am sitting here at work, using internet explorer to browse this site. Half the pics show up, half just show a white box with an "x" in it. I don't get this problem on any other site. When I search this site at home, whether on a mac or IBM, it works fine. But at work, 1/2 the pics won't show...

Why? Is there a setting I need to adjust?

If I check the board when I'm on a client site anything from You Tube doesn't show up.
They have a rule on the firewall that stops You Tube and you can't brows to You tube directly either.

I haven't had any problems with other images.

Maybe they have something similar at your work.

As Peter said, it's probably your work security filter, filtering out all of the unacceptible stuff. Can you surf porn at work? If there's something that blocks you, then that's the problem that you're having with PP.

Yes, that's not unusual. There are 2 ways to post pictures on this board.

Method 1, take a picture that is already on the net someplace and just link that location into a thread. That's the one where you put a url in between the [ img ] [ /img ] tags, but the URL is someplace on the next besides "forums.pelicanparts.com"

Method 2, upload a photo from your PC to the PelicanParts servers.

If there's a thread with 2 pictures using method 1 and 1 picture using method 2, you may only see the picture using method 2 or you may see all three or even 2.

If you can get to this site, then your work filter doesn't care about the pelicanparts.com domain, so we could upload porn all day and you'd still be able to see it (assuming Z-man or the mods didn't kill it first).

If 2 pictures were linked from the web, you may or may not be able to see them. If the first picture was linked from biblestoriesforkids.com then you'd probably be able to see that from work, but if the second picture was uploaded from hotlolitapornrightonyourpc.com, you probably would NOT see that picture.

I have the same experience. From work, I only see some pictures here, but from home, I see them all. It's completely normal and almost certainly product of your web filter at work.

Exactly. That's why I hate it when people link to pics on other sites!

Upload your car pics here and I can see them all day from work. Photobucket, or something else, nada.

But then eventually PelicanParts.com would get flagged as an "adult" site and our content filter would block me from the whole thing.

Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Go to a thread where you are having the picture problem
2. Right-click, "View Source", and find the URL for the picture
3. Try to browse to that website. Odds are your work blocks that site, but not YouTube.

A previous company I worked for left YouTube open because somebody made the case that there were technical videos on there that were business oriented. Left us open for all the Charlie the Unicorn we could handle!

Ok, here is a sample thread, and none of the pics show up...

HELP - Omega Spring

Yet, if I search for pics of parts and 90% of the other pics on this site, there is no problem. Even though it has the same url/etc...

Ditto. Those pics are on the Pelican site, so you're having a different issue.

If you right click on one of those boxes with the red X, can you click Show Picture? Does it do anything?

There's probably an IE setting that would help you, but I don't have any suggestions right now. I'll poke around. Hopefully somebody will beat me to it.

If you paste this URL into your browser's address bar do you see the pic?

Nope...says "Website Access Denied." Ok. Why? Why would a security program decline some pics, but not the website?

I could guess that maybe it's something to do with the naming convention of uploaded files or maybe the "+" symbols in the names

The best way to find out is to open a ticket with your IT staff, assuming they aren't going to ask you why you're on Pelican in the first place, or find the pics of "legs and butts" or "boobs" or whatever that we have spread around and just block the site altogether...

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our content filter is based on the domain name, basically everything between "http://" and the first "/" and nothing else.

I wonder if yours blocks file extensions? But if that were the case, you probalby wouldn't see any pics. All of Pelican would look crazy, as well as MSN, etc.

Maybe it is the special characters. Are there any threads on Pelican where you can see the pics?

Ok...now this is getting odd.

I went to other threads and the pics showed up, same url source. So, to show an example, I went to the tool bar, highlighted the web page, and went to "edit" and tried to copy the characters/address to past in the thread.

Guess what, now my "copy" function is blocked to... When I highlight a web address, and try to "copy" it, it does nothing...

That is really odd... It worked fine 5 minutes ago...

Yet, if I try to "copy" text from any other place on the page, it works fine...
