Hiring a 23 y/o Brazilian nanny - how do I go about verifying her personal info?

I got good vibes from this girl. I think she'd do a great job taking care of my 3 y/o boy. Before we offer her the job though, I want to go one step further and independently do a background check on her. I just don't know how to go about it. Any advice?

She says has a green card, having recently married a GI (I met her husband). She is a student at the local JC. She's very smart and ambitious, speaks English better than a lot of kids her age and seems to genuinely love kids. I think she's sincere but I'm wary of strangers caring for my kid in my home while my wife and I are at work. She didn't flinch at all, by the way, when I told her I am setting up wireless nanny cams. In fact, she said if that's what it takes to make us comfortable, then by all means set it up. You won't believe how many nannys I interviewed who objected to the camera set up.

Anyway, she seems really sincere but how do I know she won't abandon my kid and rip me off on her first day. What kind of background checks should I be doing besides calling her references?

Get a social security number from here and a copy of said Green Card. Use one of the large internet information engines to get a back ground check. Intellius is one of them.

Calling her references is also a great way to feel good about the whole thing. My wife does a lot of nanny work. When people ask for references, she's got a list longer than her arm, and all of them say great things. I don't know what made the first couple feel good about hiring her, but everyone else had some background. To my knowledge, nobody's ever done background checks on my wife, and she's never had nanny-cams.

I'm not at all surprised that a lot of nannies would object to cams. In one neighborhood that my wife worked, she routinely ended up watching 3 or 4 families' kids because their nannies were worthless. A lot of nannies are just lazy, that's all.

My sense would be that this girl is probably ok. She's let you meet her husband, she's cool with nanny-cams, and she seems mature and responsible? What does your gut tell you? Call the references and confirm that, but I wouldn't go crazy with the background checks.

i don't have the hard info but isn't Zero et al going to pass new regulations that they must have one day off on a weekend, get paid 1 1/2 ot after 40 hours, get paid vacations etc

I too have been looking into a deal like you, a 23 yr old nanny would be good, the problem still is talking my wife into it, she just doesn't see the need, if we only had a kid it would be so much easier.

Yup, we're on Sitter City but found this nanny on Care.com. Same thing with the bios and photos.

Great idea making copies of her green card and SSN. We need those anyway for her wrok contract and tax purposes. She'll be our employee so must pay taxes.

Ask her to bring you transcripts from her last semester at the college. It will help document who she is and good grades are always a good sign of responsibility.

Find someone with strong ties to your community. Its not worth saving a couple of bucks to chance it to a crazy girl with a nice a$$ and a take for sugar cane drinks..
