Another Tipping thread, do you tip a % regardless of the total?

Do you tip 15% (or whatever you tip) regardless of the total? (assuming good service all around)

So, you go to IHOP and the bill is $8, you feel fine tipping $1.20, or when the bill is low, do you use a sliding scale that bumps things up?

Usually round up a bit. At the coffee shop, just drop my change in, sometimes it's $.10, sometimes .$90 so it evens out over time. I tend to be a little overly generous, I put myself through school working in restaurants, my daughter is now doing the same thing working as a barista in a cafe.

I hate coins. I have never picked up coins when they are given as change. They stay on the table.

But yes, I will always round up to an even dollar amount.

I tip a bit more on low bills. I used to bartend, so I know what it's like working for tips and getting stiffed, sometimes by regular customers.

If the bill is $10, I'll usually tip $3-$4. I figure there's no way that I'd wait on someone hand and foot for 30-60 minutes making multiple trips for $1.20 or $1.50

In one of my quasi-OCD habits, I do the same thing. Typically for tipping, I divide the bill by 6 and then come up with a tip amount that rounds it to the nearest dollar. For instance, if the bill is $31.25, I divide by six in my head to roughly come up with a value of $5+ and then I would generally add $.75 and make the total bill $37.00...

For lower amounts - like an $8 tab I would add two or three dollars depending on the service.

Edit: I will also add that I tend to tip less than 15% for higher tabs - like $60+ or something. I can't bring myself to tip someone $10 for what was probably 10 minutes worth of total effort on their part.

i love coins. i have a big glass bowl i toss all my loose change in at the end of each and every day. it sometimes takes years to fill up, but when i do..i spend it on something STUPID! not even "mad money" stupid..more like "retard money" stupid.

i tip a regular 16.83%, i love complicated math at the end of each meal!! (j/k 15% or 20% is a simple head calculation i can handle)

I tip 10-25%. If the service was great the tip will reflect that. Poor... Well here's 10%. Crappy? Here's my loose change.

I've bartended and worked in a traditional food service environment and the best night of tips I've ever had was while working as a bouncer at a strip club. There was a CoP from a town about an hour away making a big ruckus and pissing people off, but he was spending money so we let him stay. Then he tried to slap a girl and I removed him, probably using a little more force than was necessary. I got the whole 'Do you know who I am?' bit and gave him the 'Oh neat, maybe you can meet our Chief of Police, cuz you're goin to jail if you don't get the fuch off the property'
Pretty much every guy in there gave me $10-20 at the end of the night on top of the house payment and $20 from each of the girls that was standard pay. I left that night with nearly $800.

I have eaten breakfast with cheapskates that tip a dollar after we sat there for over an hour chatting. I always tip a minimum of 4 bucks even if the bill was just 5 bucks. Anyplace that adds an automatic tip to large parties does not get one penny more than that. I would have tipped more if they let me decide how much to pay.

Me too! And I've noticed that when traveling to countries that do not tip, the service uniformly stinks. I like our system. I like the opportunity to reward good service.

Unless service was lousy, small tabs get more than 20%.

I hate small tippers, and when eating in groups if someone cheaps out on the tip I'll throw in a few dollars as we leave. And then avoid eating with that person again.

Not in Japan, at least not when I was in Japan. I guess things could have changed.

I'm tipping more since I got labyrinthitis (vertigo). But really I am tipping more. The economy is tough out there for many and waiting on people can be a difficult job.

I usually tip 20% or better, as long as the service was reasonable.

I never tip at Starbucks - for some reason, it really bugs me when places have the cup out on the counter; I don't think it's appropriate to ask for a tip.

I will drop in a tip in the bucket at places like Jersy's Mikes. They all clap and everyone will know I tipped them. The guy making my Big Kahuna hears that and may well lay on more ingredients.

Small tabs like breakfast at a diner, I round up by tipping at least $1 for every trip the server makes to the table, just like i'd tip a bartender $1/per drink.

So if they are attentive, and refill coffee, etc, the server is rewarded. I've tipped over 100% for small tabs and great service.
