Apple Gets More Than 600,000 Orders for iPhone 4

Apple haters try to resist..........

Both Apple and AT&T had serious problems yesterday but there are some very strong numbers here. They were way off on their projections but 10x higher than the previous phone!! WOW

Apple said on Wednesday that it and its partners took more than 600,000 orders on Tuesday for its new iPhone 4, which will be released next week. AT&T, its wireless partner in the United States, said it was suspending preorders for the phone.

“It was the largest number of preorders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions,” Apple said in a statement. “Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.”

The Web sites of both Apple and AT&T were overwhelmed by the demand on Tuesday, and AT&T could not process electronic orders at its stores for much of the day. Although Apple is still accepting preorders online, its Web site no longer promises delivery on the phone’s release date, June 24. Customers who place an order online on Wednesday may receive their phones on July 2.

Mark Siegal, an AT&T spokesman, said preorder sales for the iPhone 4 were 10 times higher than on the first day the iPhone 3GS was available for ordering last June. He said AT&T would suspend new orders for the time being.

“Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we’re suspending preordering today in order to fulfill the orders we’ve already received,” Mr. Siegal said. “The availability of additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking preorders.”

Mr. Siegal said more than 13 million people visited AT&T’s Web site on Tuesday to see if they were eligible to upgrade to the new phone, roughly three times higher that the company’s previous record.

Radio Shack said on Twitter that it had also suspended preorders for the phone.

here ya go Mr Snowtires..

But I thought the iP3G was perfect. ...these must all be sales to people w/o an iPhone.

Seriously, I wish them well. They have come a long way in their design. Everyone wins . .. even those who will pick-up the abandoned 3G i's off of craigslist in a few months. ...what will they worth then; $50?

red-beard 06-16-2010 09:05 AM

Is there anyway to tell how many are upgrades? One of my riding buddies and his wife are upgrading from older iPhones to the iP4.

island911 06-16-2010 09:09 AM

So the iP4 is 4G protocol, right?

I think it will be ~50% of the original retail which is fairly standard for used Apple hardware that's a couple of years old and functional.

In the past i've sold 5 year old Apple laptops for $500+ a piece.

So $100 for the $200 phone seems a reasonable price point.

Sure Walmart is selling off new 3G stock for $100 but you still need to do a two year contract.

There is a market for people that want the phone but not the contract.

Not 4G or even capable

Quote:

Unfortunately, for current iPhone users and those upgrading to the iPhone 4, the upgrades to HSPA+ and 4G LTE will not affect iPhone performance since these phones do not have these technologies embedded. That said, the HSPA 7.2 upgrade, 850MHz conversion, and addition of fiber links in the backhaul network will help alleviate some network congestion.

My HTC HD2 is HSPA+, which is capable of 21 Mbps.

island911 06-16-2010 12:24 PM

Yeah, but when the iP5 comes out, it will be way cooler than your HTC[/apple_fanboy]

Seriously, Apple enjoyed a short-lived moment of being ahead of the main-stream smart-phone curve. They are a bit behind, but not by much. Competition is good for the consumer.

I was answering a question from above, that asked if the iP4 was 4G. The answer is no.

Seriously, I don't hate the iPhone. I dislike how tied you are to iTunes, the Apple Store and AT&T. A locked carrier phone I understand. But the locked down phone, so that Apple controls the content on the iPad, iPhone and iPod, seems wrong. Or if not wrong, not to my liking.

Not happy about being locked to AT&T.

Not bothered by iTunes and App Store vetting.

Had a Nokia e62. Great phone. $500 unlocked.

Symbian OS, tons of apps out there but no control over the quality or credibility of the apps.

Got a virus from one that simply could not get rid of. Does not appear that it was overly malicious but every time the phone boots it tries to reinstall itself rendering the phone useless for a couple of minutes.

I used to be fairly heavy into hacking/moding scene. Got tired of having to always F with my stuff to keep it running. Became really annoying and was a real productivity waster.

Since all the software I need is available for my Apple products what do I care where it comes from.

gr8fl4porsche 06-16-2010 01:12 PM

Everyone I know who tried to get an iPhone 4 yesterday already had an iPhone - or 2.

I tried to order 2 of them and gave up.

In the business world, these are the kinds of problems you dream about.

Demand is so high for Apple / ATT's product that neither corporation can handle the volume.

Apple cannot make them fast enough and ATT cannot build a network big enough.

I am in the wrong business.

I've been holding off on upgrading to an iPhone 4, to see if T's coverage improves. Lately, it seems to be getting better in my micro region - meaning that I no longer seem to get any dropped calls in my office. If that improvement persists, I'll upgrade my phone - well, when they are no longer sold out, I will.

BTW, looks like Sprint lied about the initial sales of their new HTC EVO phone

Sprint overstated the sales of its latest, greatest smartphone the HTC EVO by three times, according to a company rep.

Originally, Sprint said, "The total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined."

It now says sales of the HTC EVO are in line with sales of the combined figures for the Instinct and the Pre.

Analyst Walter Piecyk from BTIG tells Reuters he is cutting his sales estimate to 150,000 for the opening weekend. His previous estimate was 250,000 to 300,000. The EVO is sold out everywhere, so Walter doesn't sell sales rising much in the next week.

porsche4life 06-16-2010 02:17 PM

Honestly the fact that its not 4g doesn't bother me at all... Considering the fact that 95% of the time I am in an area that does not even have 3g...

SF isn't mentioned in the summer release. But they are supposed to have HSPA+ everywhere they have direct service, by the end of the year. I know Houston is slated for the end of this month. They have been testing Dallas and Austin in the past couple of weeks, as people have been seeing the "H" replace the "3G" symbol on the phones.

Here are the T-Mobile "3G" speeds in Houston and Dallas, that I recorded in the past week. These should go up to an average of 7Mbps with HSPA+. The theoretical maximum is 21 Mbps.

Interesting. I had T-Mobile for a few years. I was quite happy w/ their coverage, plus the phone (Blackberry) worked seamlessly overseas. I love the iPhone but am on the fence with ATT. I'd be happy with T-Mobile, maybe Sprint, maybe even VZ despite leaving them in a fury 4 years ago.

RWebb 06-16-2010 03:45 PM

is the battery life supposed to be better on this thing?

porsche4life 06-16-2010 03:53 PM

Supposed to have a 40% larger battery....

And the phone is 25% slimmer....

enzo1 06-16-2010 04:14 PM

time for Apple and AT&T to get a divorce....

JavaBrewer 06-16-2010 08:24 PM

My experience with ATT and Verizon is that V blows the virtual socks off ATT as far as coverage and real world speed. ATT 3G in North County SD is horrible ~15 seconds to load PPOT where Verizon was ~5 seconds. If Verizon offered a GSM based Android phone I would flush my iPhone tomorrow.

red-beard 06-17-2010 06:25 AM

I guess they really turned on the 4G last night.

iPhone 4 Confirmed to Have 512MB of RAM (Twice the iPad and 3GS)

enzo1 06-17-2010 12:20 PM

One of our trusty Apple sources wrote us in to give us a breakdown on day one of Apple iPhone reservations. The information we have is from Apple stores only, this doesn’t include AT&T stores or Apple’s website, Best Buy or Radio Shack. We have also independently confirmed the information below.
A “large” New York Apple store had over 2,200 iPhone reservations
A “medium” sized Boston Apple store had over 800 reservations
One store in California had over 1,000 reservations, and another in California had over 1,400
A “small” Texas Apple store had over 900.
Note that these don’t include preorders, walk-in sales on launch day, or any white iPhones. So, it’s in addition to Apple’s 600,000 number.

Think Different

Steve Carlton 06-18-2010 06:45 AM

Any thoughts on the HTC EVO 4G? In my area, Sprint should roll out 4G before the end of the year, and I don't think anyone else is going to have it for a while. Web speed is important to me, and the keyboard is excellent. The weather app is great and the kickstand works for me big time. Through a business account, the $200 cost can more than be offset with a $100 port-in credit and $115-235 smart phone trade-in. Only a one year contract and $100/mo for unlimited everything, $30/mo for the hotspot option, and $7/mo for insurance (not available with AT&T last I checked).

Sprint's HTC EVO is One of The Best Android Smartphones Yet - PCWorld

IMO HTC has it going on, and is the reason why I say that Apple is behind the curve, playing catch up. --The 4.3" high res screen is a step in the right direction, and where Apple stumbled.

Apple, back with the 1st iPhone, was smart to introduce a big, HVGA screen, when the other main-stream smartphones were just QVGA. NOW, with so many smartphones at WVGA (2.5x more than iP1, 2 & 3) Apple sends their iP4 out with just a few more pixels than WVGA (just so they can claim more pixels) The problem is, Apple didn't significantly increase the screen size! Those extra pixels crammed in there are wasted. ...HTC had already figured this out with their high res screens, and is why the Original HD, and now the HD2 (aka EVO) are so popular.

It's funny that Apple was smart enough to jump on the tablet bandwagon, with the iPad. ...and push the market with the HVGA iP1. But, what they are missing is the sizing of these devices. --The iP4 and the iPad have near the same pixel count, but look at the size difference! Call me Goldilocks, but this Pad is too BIG, and this Pod is too small . . and the HTC is just right.... (actually, IMO, it could grow a bit more, add some more pixels and I would be fine with it.)

Once people figure out that their new PC was sold to them as a cellphone, the feature decisions will all become crystal clear. ....on a right-sized display. ;)

Apple Sells Three Million iPads in 80 Days

CUPERTINO, California—June 22, 2010—Apple® today announced that it sold its three millionth iPad™ yesterday, just 80 days after its introduction in the US. iPad is a revolutionary and magical product that allows users to connect with their apps, content and the Internet in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.

“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”

Developers have created over 11,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch™ user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 225,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.

I wish Jobs would stop calling it magical, it makes it sound like I bought a stuffed unicorn or something.

And the 11,000 apps story is disingenuous - most of those are re-tooled iPhone apps. Hell, I've got two apps produced by Apple themselves that haven't been updated for the iPad.

stomachmonkey 06-24-2010 07:14 PM

Spent a few days at our industry tradeshow.

Every vendor that met with me except one did their presentations from an iPad. The one who did not explained he had broken his two days earlier and had not been able to replace it in time. He looked ashamed.

One of the things we did in our booth this year was touch screens for lesser handheld titles that are a pain to demo live. Our Walmart buyer requested we do all of our presentations to them in the same format. VP of Sales is happy that I'm recommending outfitting his team with iPads.

But it IS magical . . .shiny sparkles and rainbow colors. . . la la la :D

I'm ready to get my hands on a 4... Buddy of mine went to the apple store today for a warranty on his 3GS...

Apparently making the two backed monster with some skank whilst laying on your iPhone is bad for it... His no longer had screen lighting or a lock screen. He went and it was still under warranty so Freebie phone!
