BP understimates magnitude of oil spill.... W T F... (again)

(under EStimates, typo in title, sorry...)

Instead of 1000,000 litres of oil per day, new estimations say 16,000,000 litres per day!!!!
16 times more!! thank you very much!

This comes from an internal BP document. New figures were revealed by an US politician (don't know who)
This was just on the radio over here.

Are they (BP) keeping the world in the dark on purpose or what???
Jail time for people responsable, please.... (and I don't necessarily mean the workers on the platforms)

it was Rep. Edward J. Markey, chairman of the House Energy and Env. Subcommittee

that was a worst case estimate (or projection), but BP chose not to give it out; now they look like liars - not real smart

Worst case scenario?? that probaly means that in a few months we find out that it has been that amount all the time, from day one....

I heard it differently in that 'the worse case' was if there were further failures within the current well...not failures to block it etc....

Then again....

Heard yesterday that it's expected to leak until August..(when the reliefs are supposed to be finished, as I recall) .if they can't figure out out.

Then they'll rename the entire Ocean the Black Sea.

2 billion barrels, give or take. A billion might flow on it's own like this.

IIRC, it is the est. if the BOP pops off the well entirely.

One relief well is w/in 200 ft. of the hole - but it is slow, feel your way along from here.

Everyone remember the story about the truck getting stuck under the bridge? The story goes that a kid came along on a bicycle and was watching the guys trying to get the truck unstuck and out from under the overpass.

Supposedly the kid says, "Why don't you let the air out of the tires?"

Where's this kid now when we need him?

I mean maybe there's some goofy idea like making an anthill type of containment by dropping miles of something in a coil like configuration. Gotta start thinking of crazy stuff at this point.

They have lots of drill pipe. Build a teepee.

If the oil slick gets any larger, maybe those countries who offered to sell us oil containment equipment will instead offer it to BP at little/no cost to protect their self-interests, but there's a lot of nautical miles from here to there.

Probably not going to happen; help that is.

Good thing you're giving us three decimal point accuracy there. Wouldn't want to hype the number.

Hey, let's estimate it at 16,000,000.000000000000000000000000000000000 litres of oil per day. OR, even better... 16,000,000,000.000000000000000000000000000000000 milliliters of oil per day,

seriously, liters? ....and three decimal points?

I thought the new number was the "high estimate"? They have a "low estimate" too.. As the press is so bad with numbers, and how information in general is disseminated, I am not so sure they know what numbers to give out.

It will take a long time to figure on how and what went on there.

The mere fact that BP hasn't been forthcoming on the volume of oil loss from day 1 doesn't inspire confidence in their credibility. Thus, the scathing criticism of their efforts to date.

There is enough oil there so that when you turn on the spigot to your bathtub in CA oil is going to come out.

maybe you didn't know, but BP has been supplying a very expensive deepwater video camera view for all to see. Should you get a chance take a look. The volume of matter can be estimated, but it gets tricky when you see how much is mud, and how much is gas . .. and the ratios seem to always change.

But by all mean, please criticize BP for not getting the oil portion of the estimate to three decimal places.

the point is that they withheld information

at a minimum, that does not look good for their PR

depending upon who (USCG maybe, or EPA) asked them what question, it could get ugly for them too

Dunno, they have over 173,000 followers on Twitter, BPGlobalPR seems to be doing just fine.

They're also keeping everyone quite up to date on their activities.
