Compliant units to be issued only to Acorn members in good standing.

Isn't that all of them? I had no idea there were any qualifications required to join or remain a member.

Am I missing something? I heard about this last year. I believe my dad already updated his plane. The old frequency had its problems and like a lot of other aviation devices and tech, is way out of date. The new system that relies on sats is supposed to me way more accurate in pinpointing a crash site.
Also, I thought that the 121.5 freq is still allocated for this, but just will not be monitored as heavily as before. As I understand it, heavies will still monitor the freq. while in the air.

The FCC says its rules have been amended to "prohibit further certification, manufacture, importation, sale or use of 121.5 MHz ELTs."
So basically they are going to rely on attrition. Unless the FAA will no longer issue an airworthiness cert, there really isn't a reason to run out and buy one. Except if you fly over expanses of wilderness you may have a little more peace-of-mind knowing the 406 Mhz is satellite monitored where the 121.5 Mhz is no longer satellite monitored.

Yes you can still use your old ones till they no longer work. I service 6 Cessna's and have no plans to change over to the 406 units. But if one fails....

This seems pretty easy if you ask me.. If you've got the money now, buy the new unit and have a better chance of being rescued or if it's not in the cards, rely on the old system until the unit fails, then replace. We all know that aircraft ownership is not cheap, nor should shortcuts be taken at the expense of safety.

This is not necessarily a bad idea. I would feel a lot more comfortable knowing that my ELT can be picked up by satellite than not. There are some very remote areas in this country - I've flown across a lot of them.
They could simply make 121.5 ELTs obsolete with one stroke of the pen you know - doing it this way and allowing people some time to convert over is the right way to do it, but I absolutely would prefer a newer ELT with the satellite communications capability.

the downside is the cost to switch over to 406 MHz, the upside is that they will actually be monitored. My 2 centavos is that it's a draw.

You could just keep your serviceable 121.5 in the airframe, and get a portable 406. PLB. But you would have to manually set it off. A new ELT is nearly the same price at almost a grand though.

If I ever "wreck" my baby, I will likely be dead anyhow. If I simply make a rough off field "landing", I will use my cell phone to call for a ride.
![]() ![]() As an IA/AP, I can appreciate the importance of stringent regulations regarding aviation (the average Joe swapping non approved used car parts into his ratty old Cessna 172 scares the bejeebus out of me)....... On the other hand, I hate helmet laws (even though I "choose" to wear one), seatbelt laws, .08 DUI laws etc, so at times I get a bit flustered when I see some new expensive Airworthiness Directives issued that sometimes look to be a kneejerk govt reaction to a very small problem.

Guys, the one thing that no one has mentioned is that the companies out there making the new 406 units first off do not have a really reliable unit right now. and simply cannot supply all the 406 units if we all had to switch by August. I know of several people who bought the new 406 models only to have sent them back time and time again for repairs after they were defective.
This is a not workable deadline in any way. Time to contact the AOPA and our reps...
