New Gadget Fever
I believe I have a bad case of it.
I want an iPad. I don't need an iPad - but I want one. I really like my iPhone and I would loooooove a giant version of it. My kids would enjoy it. It will make them smarter. It will make people like me. It will make girls wish they could be with me...except my wife...it will make her angry until she sees that iBooks comes with Winnie the Pooh. Then she will be into it and we'll have mad crazy lovin... Oh the fever... I have not had new gadget fever in this way in a looong time - I resisted the iPhone until earlier this year. I know that this iPad is also probably the 'lame' one and that a better one, more like the new iPhone (which I'm fairly 'meh' over) with a webcam built in will be out next year (I am predicting). So...I can't even remember the last gadget that got me to new gadget fever this bad... What is making it worse is how much talk there is of them at work with us having to figure out some sort of a 'policy' around them for security and protection of intellectual property and what not...yet...they...won't...buy...me...one...so...I ...can...figure...that...all...out.... FEVER!

Gadgets are like movies used to be. ..y'know; "have you seen the new flick _____?" Except now it's "did ya get the new ______ yet"
A bit more expensive than a movie. But at least it lasts about as long .. . until the sequel

"gotta have it."
"Why? Do you have a use for it?" "Probably not, but gotta have it. All the cool people have one." "oh, that makes perfect sense"

A friend buys new gadgets and he acts like he has just invented it. Good God Man, you just went out and bought it - relax. I don't quite say this to him but I should, I just act disinterested hoping he will get bored and start talking about other things. Actually I can't stand them because when I was a computer tech every noddy at work would buy one of these things then get me to set it up for them then they thought they were so smart because you press this button right here and it transfers all your scheduled meetings from the PC to the gadget - wow how amazing I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.

I understand your thinking. It gives you something to look forward to.
I've been living the same way since my marriage broke up. After 9 years I'm getting close to the bottom of the list. This is the current "desire"... ![]()

I don't usually get gadget fever. I like tech stuff and gadgets, but so many gadgets seem like they don't live up to the hype.
I didn't get gadget fever when DVDs came out, I got one, but I was able to wait until the price came down and they were more reasonable. Same thing with Flat screen computer monitors, large screen flat panel TVs and Blu-Ray. I got my wife a G1 phone and after tinkering with it for a week so I could teach her how to use it, I had to have one. That's the first time in a long time that I've had the fever. A couple of my coworkers have the iPad, and I have to say, I've got iPad fever now too. I think I'd get a lot of use out of an iPad. I'm hoping to get one for my B-day in Aug. I'm going to get the WiFi version. I'd thought about getting the upgraded 32 or 64GB versions, but I don't think I can justify spending $700 for one, $500 yes, $700 no. I've wondered about waiting for someone to put out an Android-iPad clone, but i don't think anyone will be able to touch the iPad with a clone. I suspect anything else will be clunkier and slightly less. Apple does seem to get their hardware right.

I also don't understand the Netbook bashing, which is all over the place. I'd love a Win 7 tablet. Asus looks like they are closest to a working one. I expect I'll pick one up when they are ready. I already take my netbook with me just about anywhere, in case I need to do some serious work while out of the house.

Actually there were two studies I recently read which dealt with gadget obsession - firstly they are actually making people dumber. This is actually documented. Secondly they are adversely impacting the role of parents with their children - children are feeling jealousy and exhibiting associated behavioral problems because they're competing with gadgets for parental time.
As a side note, here's an Apple fan/disciple. I honestly don't understand the obsession. Yeah, let's get excited about some geek toy made in China which is overpriced, saddles you with obscenely restrictive terms of use and locks you into a long-term contract with a lousy cell phone carrier. Yep, that sure excites me - not. ![]()

While we are confessing, this is on my current gadget 'wish list:'
![]() (Nikon D5000, or a D3000). But it will have to wait until the kitchen-redo is complete in September. Until then, I will continue to use my 4megapix Nikon Coolpix L4 point-and-shoot digital camera. After the kitchen is done, I can start saving for my next 'gadget': ![]() ![]() -Z-man.

The only thing is - the phone is kind of awesome. The bastards - and Steve is a bastard - just get it right with the UI and the hardware. It's not perfect but it is far closer than any other device out there. I don't get all new wriggly over things like DVD and BlueRay (it COULD happen, has happened but I think I'm past that unless I totally regress to my 1990s state) but the iPhone has released the kraken inside me who was previously dormant. That Kraken, likes the iPad. Alot. I just want the base model though, I'd like 64gb but I can deal with 16. It would be nice to have the 3G model but I am not prepared to take on another monthly charge. I just hope someone jail breaks the new iOS 4 so I can tether with it. I hate cell phone companies and their stupid charges for every feature. I could go on a serious anti-competitive rant over cell companies but I will contain myself to the new gadget fever. ![]() $500 and change is a lot of money for a stupid gadget. The money is from my 'garage' fund. My 'garage' fund is money that flows through my garage, I sell something I have no use for anymore from the garage and it goes into the garage fund to be spent on more things I don't need. Incidentally, I have a netbook and I think they are dumb. I got it for $150 with the purchase of my wife's laptop from Dell. It's a nice computer and I like it but it's just too damned small. The screen on the iPad is about the same size but with the zoom functions and the touch screen and what not - it isn't 'cramped' like the netbook is.
