I'm 6' 2", 240 - right on the cusp of obesity according to the BMI calculators.

I play basketball (full court) and volleyball (sand) 3 to 5 days a week, lift weights 5 days a week (I can bench 310 on a good day).

Yes, I have some extra around the middle, but am I really "obese?"

You know the answer to your own question.

How do you feel? Do you feel obese? Do you feel unhealthy?

Scuba Steve 06-30-2010 08:22 AM

5 feet 9 / 135lbs here. I've been the same since high school.

I think in San Antonio more than 2/3 are obese. They had to widen the aisles at the grocery store near my house, and at work I could swear the armrests on the new chairs they got are out extra far. I have to lean with my elbows out to reach them.

I'm 5'10"(used to be 5'11")/170 lbs. w/ a 32 waist that I've had since I was 32 yrs. old. My parents used to say I should slow down and not do so much. I'm glad I've been accustomed to an active life, plus although I've eaten a lot when I was really physically active, I've always stopped eating when I've felt full.
This laziness has been going on for a long time hasn't it?? Wasn't it Henry Ford that said the U.S. was the only country at the time where people could drive to the poor house in a car? I guess he was referring the the richness of the country, but I doubt anybody with a car would normally choose to drive to the poor house just to get exercise.

I knew I was fat when I didn't fit in an economy seat on a plane comfortably.

Your own President BO inspired me to get fit. He's successful, fit and a smoker.

I think this graphic is somewhat misleading. It measures those over 15 w/ BMI over 30, what about all the fat kids that will grow into fat adults. I'd bet it's actually closer to 40% when you factor in the kids that are obese. Lazy all the way around. If they can afford to get fat they can afford to eat quality, nutritious food. They just prefer the taste of a Double McCheeseburger. This problem has evolved as more fast food has become available. Hell, you can't get broccoli or asparagus at McD's, those people can't even spell or pronounce those veggies.

It's a health catastrophe, worse than many other unhealthy conditions and it's completely preventable if people would just eat at home and eat using their brain and not their eyes. We're paying for this through the healthcare system, it's part of the reason costs are so high. Hospitals are actually buying equipment that is built for fat people and we're all paying the bill.

I'm disgusted by it, go to an airport and see all the fat people traveling. They aren't traveling because they are on freakin welfare, they have money, just too damn lazy to scope out a good healthy meal. No excuse for being obese, overweigh perhaps but not obese.

TV glorifies it with "The Biggest Loser", how about another program, we'll call it "The Biggest Dead Loser". Don't people realize this is killing them.

besides the behavioral issues, lack of high quality food can lead to what is known as "specific nutritional hunger"

low quality food is low in certain nutrients that the body needs - so in order to obtain a req'd level, one must eat a large amount of the low quality food - that means one takes in excess calories

classic examples include lack of iodine in some isolated inland areas of the the US and Europe, as well as dirt eating in the South - particular areas of white or grayish clay soils were defended by family groups from others in some parts of the South as late as the early 20th Century -- analysis showed that these clays were high in micro-nutrients, which were lacking in the surrounding areas of lateritic soils

and BTW if'n I catches any of you in my family's dirt area, you'll become a part of a "long-pig" BBQ

and what about the average size (height and muscle mass) of a person in the US versus Japan or Korea?

It is nonsense that it is cheaper to eat McDonalds, or whatever, than it is to eat healthy food.

You can get 5 pounds of fruit for the price of a combo meal.

Right now, I have enough peaches on the tree in my back yard to kill 20 people from diarrhea if they ate them all at the same time. Even if you live in an apt, you can put a tomato plant in a pot, and you have all the tomatoes you can eat all summer for a few bucks.

Jim Richards 06-30-2010 11:13 AM

it's EASIER to eat McDucks, not cheaper. Plus, the kids get toxic toys made in China along with their Happy Meal.

This issue is actually a microcosm of why our country is in so much trouble. For whatever reason, personal responsibility just really doesn't exist anymore.

For whatever ails you, it's gotta be someone else's fault, or because of some reason beyond any of your control.

You're a fat pig?

Hey, it's not your fault! You're simply born too dumb (it's genetics fault, nothing you can do about it!), weren't raised right (it's your parent's fault!), have been exposed to too much advertising (it's the media's fault!), have to drive past too many McDs every day (it's Ronald McD's fault!), weren't served nutritious meals in school (it's the taxpayer's fault!), etc. etc. etc.

Always someone else's fault, and there's nothing you as an individual person can do about it. That goes for everything these days. Bought a house you can't afford and could never hope to afford, and now are getting foreclosed on? Bank's fault. Decided when you were healthy to not buy health insurance and now need it and don't have it? Govt's fault.

And now, even something as personal and basic as choosing what to shove in your own piehole is someone else's fault. Sheesh.

Fat people are all Bush's fault!

Vash,

About 60 acres total, three good shooting zones. Give me a heads up! Indiana: shotgun or larger than .38 (no 30.06 or .308) or blackpowder or bow. We gots widdle wild vermin deer, ducks, and turkey! (no shooting of the highland cows allowed ;-)

vash 06-30-2010 12:51 PM

bow hunting cool? i am freaking obsessed.

Maybe I just was lucky with genetics. None of my four other siblings are overweight and I don't think any of us are big exersize fanatics. At 57 I weigh what I did in high school (155).
