the link between obesity and poverty puzzles me. I understand that the poor can't really afford high quality food but how does that relate to over eating and lack of exercise?

Often wondered the same myself. Sure different from people in poverty 50 years ago. Guess the difference is that now even poor people can get all the food they want.

Not me.

It's a choice to be fat or thin. I'm living proof.

I'm 45 and I've lost 42 pounds in just under three years. (12 pounds to go before I'm the ideal weight for my height)
I walk most days and watch what I eat. It's hard when you begin but it gets easier.

I can sit in MC Donald's and watch my children eat and not be tempted. I just sit there sipping a black coffee with no sugar.

Rikao4 06-30-2010 06:55 AM

being fat now is like..
having a pregnant 12 yr old..
Mom & who ever say..so what..
upside...invest in diabetes clinics..
or Minivan stock...
it's the only trans option for tubbies..
easy bet..
Van = fatties 80% of the time..
it's the only thing they can lardass into..

Laziness, lack of personal accountability and responsibility, lack of common sense and lack of discipline = make you poor.

End of story.

vash 06-30-2010 06:59 AM

seriously, i'm not that fat. i need to hike to 10,000 feet in sept chasing elk with a bow. with that looming in my future..i feel fat.

august..the sierras...deer. 9000 feet. full pack..7-days in the backwoods. if i get one, we have to pack it out. i may miss on purpose.

fat.

Groesbeck Hurricane 06-30-2010 07:03 AM

Yep, my BMI is rather high! 5'11" and 235.

What does this not take into account? 36" waist!

I hate the doctor looking at me and calling me morbidly obese when he is wearing 44" jeans. When confronted, the doctor states "I have a low BMI." Turns out 195 and 6' is a low BMI even though he is busting out of the 44" jeans!!!

Anyway, people do not have their children out working in the yard anymore. How many of us have gardens? Grow our own fresh foods? How many of our children actually are required to do work around the home? How many of us do work around the home? How many of us have sedentary work for which we are paid?

Yep, I'm fatter than I was at 21. Back then I was 190 with about a 29" waist. No I am not in as good of shape as back then when I ran up to 10 miles a day. I will still be out there helping load by hand about 2500 90 pound hay bales in the trailer and unloading them into the barn!

Jim Richards 06-30-2010 07:06 AM

Obese people. Loading/unloading hay bales by hand. Hmmm, we need lot's of fat farms? :)

vash 06-30-2010 07:08 AM

david..i'll come help if you let me put a treestand up in them trees!!

yard work is kickbutt cardio. digging a hole especially.

McL I was thinking that way as well. If you read the article though the same old story tries to excuse the laziness. I really giggled at the line ....."poor people live more than one mile from a grocery store".... Shee-it it's 3 miles to a deli/grocery store from my house and I often bicycle to it. The A&P is 6 miles.

sc_rufctr 06-30-2010 07:17 AM

Just get out there and walk... 20 minutes a day to start with.

Just try it for a week. See what happens. :)

The lack of exercise is a result of being overweight and negitive peer pressure and adopting that sort of lifestyle.

It is not so much over eating, but more being addicted to cheap carbs and sugars. Look at the modern diet as more as an addiction and you can so how so many people get so big..:(

Shaun @ Tru6 06-30-2010 07:52 AM

The Ur-Poor
Laziness, lack of personal accountability and responsibility, lack of common sense and lack of discipline = make you poor. need to add general intelligence as a factor. There are a ton of people at the early part and top of the bell curve that will always be poor because they don't have any attributes to help them succeed.

being born into poverty means your role models are as above, even if you have above average intelligence, your entire environment is built on the norms of poverty.

it's a cycle. hard to break.

No one wants to pay taxes for quality school lunches. schools heat and serve manufactured salt-sugar-fat-starch crap. it's fast. it's cheap. it's easy. it's easy. it's easy. everyone likes it. it's tasty. it's easy. it's cheap. 2-working parent households. no time to make good lunch. send them off to school. it's easy. Corporate sponsors in school means money, money that people don't want to pay in taxes. Corporate sponsors are sugar, fat, salt and starch.

Your eating habits are formed as children. Fix obesity. Fix what children eat. Fix a value system based on cheap-easy-fast.

URY914 06-30-2010 07:53 AM

I've lost 10 pounds since losing my job.
Food cost money. No money no food.

I don't see how the poor are so fat. Go to any mall or movie or beach or amusement park and it is scary how my young FAT people there are. 25-35 yo and +50 pounds over weight.

sc_rufctr 06-30-2010 08:01 AM

There are plenty of rich people who are fat. The other extreme... Michael Jackson was thin but was he healthy?

A Muslim friend said something to me once that I will never forget.

Maybe we need to toughen up a bit and pull up our panties. ;)

Go out for a walk. 20 minutes to start with. See what happens.

fruits and veggie at the local mega store cost more than a combo meal at macdonalds.

a box of mac and cheese is cheap! buying a nice piece of salmon? not cheap.

life is wierd, for sure.

Panties should only move in one direction.

The only positive information I can see in all the data is that we're dragging frakkin' Mexico down with us. U-S-A! U-S-A!
