if you do not like someone, can you pretend?

my wife and i got into a discussion. she said, i cannot hide it if i find someone un-likeable. some new guy just transferred into our office. first thing out of his mouth (not even a hello) was to ask if and how he could get plenty of overtime. i didnt respond and turned and walked away, leaving the other guy in my room to give the polite response.

maybe my wife is right.

Maybe the guy was nervous. Maybe he thought overtime and team player are synonymous.

I am from the North east and I swear I am related to Dennis Leary. If I don;t like you, you will know.

I'm so happy to work from home and not have to put up with the office environment. I just try very hard to stay away from people I dislike. Once such woman was a co-worker for a long time. I could not avoid her always and we did have to work on some projects together. I really hated her though. But her efforts got me a huge payout and saved my job (unbeknownst to her) when I was really about to be canned. I sent her a thank you card with a $100 gift card to Macy's. I still hate her guts, but felt it was money well spent.

I can be civil, but no, I can't fake it. I am nice to everyone until they give me a reason not to be.

I have not said a word to my brother's ex-wife in years, and see her every month or two.

sounds like a pretty ignorant action on your part, your wife is right on this one, quit being a dick head and give the guy a chance, I won't take a jiob unless its 84 hours a week, I get ahead because of it, my family wants for nothing, maybe he wants the same thing for his family
Chill dude

Who needs to chill?

vash, yes, the rest of the story says a lot. So, the overtime comment is in reference to the new guy also making minimum wage but with some overtime as I read it.

Wait, his "rest of the story" post was deleted. No wonder the quote button wouldn't work.

I can be civil with people I dislike.

But there is one lady in my department (never had to work with her) who is friends with some of my friends, and she refuses to extend the same courtesy. I've tried for a long time to be civil with her, I even did her some favors just to try to shut her up. No dice.

I really can't stand her. She's the same age as me. She's about 40 lbs. overweight, rarely brushes her hair and doesn't wear makeup, except for the blotches that don't match her skin-tone to cover zits. And it's not like she has a great personality. She has a high, whiny, nasally voice. She complains constantly--especially about not having a boyfriend, husband, or children. (Gee, I wonder why?) She goes on tons of blind dates, but never any second dates. She talks over people. She is bossy.

A few years ago we were at a party and she got wasted (happens almost every time). She loudly proclaimed that she was done with men, and was going to get artificially inseminated. I think I called her a "sperm burglar". She waited until my back was turned and kicked me hard in the back of the knee. I turned around and told her she got her freebee, because the next one I was hitting back. She left the party and drove home very drunk.

And then there's her driving. She freely admits to watching movies/texting/talking (with her hands) on her iPhone while driving. She is the definition of a distracted driver, and that's sober. I'm amazed she doesn't have a DUI for the number of times she's driven home drunk, as I imagine she's much worse driving then. A few years ago she ran over a guy on a motorcycle that "she didn't see".

You can imagine my level of patience if I can try to be civil to this beast. But I'm pretty much done with that. Our mutual friends keep us separated, but I will screw with her without mercy if she provokes me.

The strange thing is, I have no idea what this girl has against me. She's been a b**** from hell since the moment I met her (ten years ago), and only in the past 2-3 years have I given it back from her. (There was a nice 5 year break when I didn't see her after she nearly killed that guy on the motorcycle.)

+1 if I think I need to. I think guys are better at it than women, but I could be wrong.

Thought about that Oracle. She's never been nice to me in any way (even way back when I first met her). Oh, and her and my wife get along great. It doesn't make any sense.

(My wife knows how I feel about her. She doesn't get invited to anything we organize.)

And it doesn't really bother me. It would bother me if she was someone I wanted in my presence. But I've come to realize that if we did get along (even superficially), that would mean having to be around her more.

I think its a good skill to have but not one that necessarily has to be employed in each situation. Think of it as "keeping your friends close, and your enemies closer", especially if you need to keep your head on straight to get things done.

I find its easier to pretend to like someone than it is to get all aggravated and stressed out every time you are around them.

I don't conscientiously "pretend", its more of just "staying neutral", "having no opinion".

Then, you might even experience the rare case where the two of you will actually become friends.

I'm nice to everyone - even people I don't like. I'm from the South. That's just what we do.
