wireless internet

My usual DSL provider cannot give me service at my new house. I'm going to switch over to a wireless card. Anyone know which service is best?

If possible i'd like to get one without a contract, and as cheap as possible while still maintaining DSL or greater type speed.

Help.

If you have Cricket in your area they offer a wireless card with no contract. They use Sprint so hopefully their service is good there.

Cingular/ATT has 3G everywhere (except for out of the way places in the middle of no-where like: Houston, Dallas, Austin, Philadelphia, New York, Albany, Detroit, Cincinnati, Denver, Little Rock). We had it for years, never had better than about 2X dial-up. NEVER!

Verizon has been better for us, but they are also the ONLY carrier with service at our house.

I have a buddy on SPRINT. He LOVES it and has an unlimited download plan. Good luck finding one of those now.

(Green text) you just want it so you can surf when you're cruizing in your 928 LOL haha

I used the "tetherberry" program with my blackberry for a week to try it out (free trial) and it was impressive, but you'll need to watch your data usage as even verizons "unlimited data" plan is restricted to a few gig.....I never got near a 10th of the allotted amount in that one week though.....

I have a MiFi on Verizon. It works pretty well, as fast as DSL anyway. However, the monthly limit is 5GB. I never come close - only use it for work trips - but if it is your primary Internet connection, you might have a problem. Probably, will have a problem.

Maybe look into getting your Internet via cable, or satellite.

+1 Cable or Fios would be much better options if available at your location.

Otherwise I would lean towards the same company that your normal cell phone is with, assuming you get a strong signal and are reasonably happy with them. I have both AT&T and Verizon USB cell modems for work due to coverage differences. Honestly the AT&T ones work great everywhere except one customer site, where Verizon is the only game in town.

Beware the 5GB limits -- the costs can go up steeply once you max that out -- which is not hard to do with heavy video or itunes kind of usage but unlikely you'd hit it with regular web surfing and email sort of stuff.

Interesting...I use Verizon almost exclusively and have had no problems at all. It is, in fact, often better that my sat connection at home. My Dad, who also lives in the sticks, uses his as a primary and swears by it.

They have a 30 day trial program with no commitment. Worth the money for the test drive.

"Interesting...I use Verizon almost exclusively and have had no problems at all."

I didn't mean a problem with reliability, I meant a problem with monthly bandwidth limit.

But, since sniper hardly spends any time surfing the web, that shouldn't be a problem for him :-)

Oh, and I missed an opportunity to put in a plug about AgriStar/HughesNet!

20 days or so into the service their equipment takes a nose dive, breaks down. No storms, no lightning strike, just the equipment breaks down. ~70 days into arguing with them they state they do not have enough equipment to re-supply all the broken units AND add new customers.

Took me months but I got my money back. Oh, and I still have their useless equipment if anyone is interested. They abandoned it. I have two modems and one dish. Seems I received a new modem months after we cancelled service and got our refunds. They refused to pay to have it sent back and I quit wasting my time with them.

Sprint has a new "4G" service called WiMax. Several companies are also reselling the Sprint service under a veriety of names. It has the potential of the fastest wireless internet out there. But...service area is limited.

If you can't get DSL at your new address, what about a cable modem? Are you that far outside the city?

Give us a little more info and pictures of latin hottie and we'll see if we can help you.

Check on Clear Wireless. They're wireless (duh) but I don't believe they're doing it in the traditional sense (a la phone companies). Not sure about pricing or availability in your area.

I know here in KC Sprint is awful and you would think it would be the best as their headquarters is here.

Clear is using the Sprint WiMax network. They, along with Virgin, are some of the resellers.

Clear works via comcast's network here in Philadelphia and it works pretty good for a fair price, I have it in my shop and garage, pretty sure it will work fine over there in the Fishtown area.

Snipe, she appears to need my assistance. Please send her over and I will send her back when she is "good and ready for you" so to speak!
