I was in HS when Purple Rain came out - I was unimpressed. I was into classic rock and some of the alternative (or whatever we called stuff like Talking Heads, U2 etc) stuff at the time.

A girlfriend got tickets (good seats) to one of his shows. I was in awe - the guy put on one hell of a show:
- Crazy entertaining showmanship
- Opened with some very impressive jamming out on the piano. Mid jam, he jumped up on the piano and finished the song out with equally mind boggling guitar work.

I'm still not a fan of his music, but I haven't seen many other artists with as much talent as the guy and for that, he has my respect.
