His son Hank has been running baseball operations.

Disclosure: I am a life-long Yankee fan.

I didn't like when George was running the team. He messed with Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson and Dave Winfield too much. He tried to buy championships, instead of grow them.

However, he is one of the main reasons that baseball doesn't have a hard salary cap, and I like that. In other sports, the risks to ownership are mitigated by revenue sharing and salary caps.

Man, may he R.I.P. Frankly, may we all be so lucky to go the same way...age 80, a sudden & fatal heart attack... Much better than going out slow and full of pain.

R.I.P.

I respect his drive to win, unfortunately in my mind he wrecked baseball by mastering the idea of buying a title. Glad you can't do that in the NFL and that's a big reason why it's our most popular sport.

I was listening to the radio news when I heard. First they ran a story on the economy and the Bush tax cuts, including the death tax. The Steinbrenner story was next.

RIP George. You parlayed $10 million into $1 billion. You're gonna pizz some people off doing that.

The New York Post ran a story on his inheritance. By dying in 2010 he kept over half a billion bucks from falling into the evil clutches of the govt. If he died next year, the death tax would probably have forced the family into selling the team just to pay the taxes.

Also, there is a story of a 16-year old black youth who was caught red-handed by Steinbrenner, painting grafitti on Yankee Stadium, back in about 1974. George had the kid locked up in the stadium's security room. Later, George had a talk with the kid, then let him be bat boy in that night's game. The kid still works for the Yankeees. He says Steinbrenner saved his life.

Yes, I would weep for the Steinbrenner family and their financial woes. Not.
