Little Runaway!

Holy crap!
My wife is out for a run and I am looking after the little guy (2 1/2) and it is really quiet in the condo we are staying at.
I casually call to him to find out what he is doing......No answer.
I walk into the bedroom to see if he is tormenting the cat under the bed.... No one there.
I look in the bedroom he is staying in.... Not in, under or around the bed.
I look in all the closets (did I tell you my heart rate was up a little at this point?).....Nothing...
Door is unlocked and closed, so I grab my shoes and run down the common balcony space that serves as the entrance for all the condos...... Holy schite!!! Heart rate way way up!!!
Run the entire length of the building and found the little wanderer at the far end of the building........
Whew!
I have to log off and give him another hug and play for a while.

Same thing happened to us. Get those door knob covers that keep kids (and some adults) from turning the knob. Well worth the $5.

Been there! My son let himself out around that age too. We put those really annoying squeeze-gaurds on the doorknobs. Scary

My youngest used to initiate an impromtu game of hide and seek in the clothing racks while we cruised the mall. Caused more than a couple sudden heart rate increases before she learned that wasn't as much fun for dad as it was for her.
18 years later my heart rate still rises when she goes shopping but that's 'cause she has one of my credit cards.

I think every parent alive must know that feeling, but that was really a first for me.
I asked him about it later and he said he was looking for mummy on her run because he missed her....

What surprized me is that so many here had the same or similar situation happen to them.

I think our dear Angela even had one escape from her.

I just can't wait for that to happen!
Full discloser. I told my wife what had happened as soon as she had gotten back from her run.
I guess my wide eyed I need a coffee and a shot of whiskey look was enough to convince her that I had suffered enough.

Luckliy my son hasn't done that yet. When I was in the Navy, a freind from my squadron lived in the same rat-hole apartment complex as me. It was one of those 2 story box designs, with the doors facing the inside, with a courtyard and a pool.

This one, actually:

Sunnyvale, CA - Google Maps

We both lived on the first floor, and one Saturday morning, I am kicking back watching TV, and some movement caught my eye. I look over, and across the courtyard, on the second floor is his 2 year old son, running along the balcony.

I go grab him, and get him home, to find his front door open, dad is at work, and his mom asleep. She had laid down while he was napping, and he had woken up first. She locked and chained the door, but the little Houdini he had made an impromptu scaffolding out of a chair and his daiper box to climb up and take the chain off and open the deadbolt.

Luckily he went up, because he could have easily went the other way and ended up in traffic.
