U Just Gotta Know What Yer Doing

Today I picked up 3 books in a Lot at an auction.... for $220.00

They are:

1. Colt Firearms by Rl Wilson and I think Suterland.

2. Colt Single Actions by Kopec

3. Colt 1911 & 1911A1's Service Models.from 1900 to 1945 .by Charles Clawson

Now why Ohhh why would I drop $220 on these books?

Well the Wilson book if it is the one I am thinking it is, is worth a coupla hundred the Kopec book retails for $200 and the Clawson book is the reason all by itself for the purchase...It is outa print and is highly desirabel to the tune of $895 to $1300.

I think the confusion in the other bidders was there is a Collectors Guide to the 1911 by Clawson that runs from $95 to 275...They just didn't realize what they were looking at.

So the first two will be sold to recoup my dinero and the 3rd well it goes on the shelf.

Tabby, do you use bookfinder.com

Very helpful Martin Smith's mom (of the board) recommended that site for a lot of old books that I inherited. My 1st edition , two volume set of "The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government " by Jefferson Davis is worth about $750.

Also ABE Book Exchange...

When vacationing up in the San Juan's I found the 4 volume set of Thomas Jefferson's Works published by TJ Randolph in 1828 for $75...last I checked They were worth $1500

I was also able to score at auction awhile back the 5 volume set of Jan Stills Lugers along with 14 other books on German pistolas..for a $1000...the Luger books are worth about $1500.00 alone

Also today I bought a 4 book lot on various guns for $20 with one being on High Standards if it is the one I am thinking it is worth $60.

I also bought 3 HIgh Standard magazines for $20..those are worth about $20 to $30 each.

A lot of books I have bought over the years have gone up a lot in value when they went outa print..

Well I received those books and a coupla of other lots from the same auction.

Already sold the Sutherland Wilson book and one other for $215.00...Have the Kopec book on The Study of the Colt SA....which I will advertise on Gunbroker for $165.00

That leaves the Clawson book on Govt Mdl 1911's for FREE...that is $800 smackers...After receiving it I can see why it is sooo expensive..IT IS SO INCLUSIVE..if U ever fk around with US military 1911's you need this book to know what is straight or NOT.

Also included in that purchase was a small monograph on High Standard Pistols worth $15 and a coupla other small books worth $20 or so along with the Other book I sold for $15 and 3 High Standard magazines which I got for $22.00..they are worth about $20 each..

So all in all this was not a bad turn on the money..

I haven't seen the Clawson book for anywhere near $1000-$1200 for several years. I wish I could buy that one!

There was a Carrera RS book on ebay a few weeks ago that went for under $400. I was kicking myself for missing that one...

Clawson's book was published by a small publishing firm in Ann Arbor, MI, if I remember correctly. My friend met him and bought his copy of the book directly from Clawson himself at a gun show. Some of the M1911A1's in the Clawson book are my friend's pistols (Union Switch and Signal).

Well to clarify is it going for more than 1000 to 1200 or less than...

Well if U look in Brophys 1903 Springfield Book...I think it is pg 137 there is a picture of a Springfield rifle in 22 Hornet by SN...I have that rifle...it is so rare of Springlfield that it is made of pure unobtanium...

Also in the 1998 Gun Digest there is an article on the Early 22 Hornets by Mark Beneson..of the 12 rifles listed in his apendix I have 3 of them.

Also if you look on the cover of the 2000 Standard Catalog of Firearms and even in the current edition under Rigby rifles you will see a picture of my Rigby BA rifle.
