Keeping it short: I have a friend who has started a new job in Spring, Texas as a Machinist. He has been unemployed for over a year. He is NOT from the area and knows no one in the area. Everyone I know is in SE Houston and they had no good suggestions.
Does anyone here know of or have leads to inexpensive housing in the local area? Man is single, non-smoker, non-drinker, no pets, no kids and he drives a Volvo (gotta include European car content, non??? ![]() If you need more specifics please PM me.

I would expect he could find a trailer on a spot of land fairly close or choose one of the many apartments in the area.

What is inexpensive? Spring covers a lot of real estate and homes in all price ranges, apartments in all prices. USPS also does a good job of "confusing" the boundaries of Spring , as it's definition includes many areas that have other geographic descriptions. My town for example is a municipality with it s own elected officials and police force (Oak Ridge North) as is the Woodlands, yet to the USPS it is "Spring. Go figure. Point being that it is difficult to determine (from afar - on the internet) to tell where he wants to be. I would suggest getting a road map of the area and nail it down that way. Have no fear, there is much to choose from. Tell him welcome from a Pelican.

If he is coming from someplace like Kalifornia all housing will look cheap.

Sounds like not having a place to live is the least of his problems....

Temporary housing is in place, but it IS temporary.
Nope, housing costs will be high to him, coming from Detroit. Crime rate in the area is a welcome change, the heat/humidity is not! I believe we are talking less than $1,000.00 per month total cost. The lower, the better! Maybe a better question: What areas would yall look at? A bit East/West to drive in? It has been north of 15 years since I lived in Houston and that was in SE Houston. Back when Pearland was "the sticks", Alvin was hicstown, The Woodlands had trees, and Spring was a little East Texas town that sprawled out everywhere...

I don't spend much time in Spring, but everything's so built up outside Houston that housing should be easy. If he wants it simple there are plenty of apartments and that far out I bet he could find a decent one bedroom for not much over $500. For a $1000 and some effort he could find a nice small house.

I'm "closer" than the rest of you but not that close. But there are TONS of apartments around there that are not expensive. There are also lots of small 2-3 bedroom houses that used to be very inexpensive, should be still well under $100K.
There aren't really any bad areas around there. Where is he working? Hooks?

Well, if he's got temporary housing in place, at least he's got someplace to land. Then it's just a matter of finding a new favorite bar & strip club. Then he'll be ready for single life in Houston. (or so I've heard).

I like Spring, lots of inexpensive housing around there, you go much South of there and it can get sketchy.
Sports Bar, SRO on 1960, Montgomery Co Fair and Cookoff, Cajun Catfish Festival both up in Conroe are a lot of fun. He could rent a decent place on Lake Conroe for a grand. I get a grand a month for a 2000 sq ft place there. Might be bulletin board at Montgomery County Community College with people looking for room mates, just a bit North of Spring.

Edit - I do want to emphasize that there are some incredible properties there - but at the same price as what I would consider a fare exchange for my home here. Sure they have +1K sq/ft and a larger yard but then I have the more favorable climate and no bugs... Last edited by JavaBrewer; 08-06-2010 at 10:24 PM.. |

You do get used to the humidity, or I did. People that cry all the time about it, I would tell them they better soak their socks in coal oil to keep the ants from crawling up their leg and eatin' that candy ass right off.
You just do stuff early, not unlike our ameegoes from AZ when the temp in the shade is pushin' a buck twenty at tea time. I have been in many a McMansion in the great state of Texas, seen pools shaped like the out line of the state, foyer that looks like the lobby of the Ritz or something. That is what people do in a boom, buy stuff, big houses. Couple of booms and busts last 20-30 years.
