Chip Dip

OK, so I'm living here in Saudi Arabia and I'm looking for food that I like and I'm thinking chips and dip! The local store here in Dhahran was selling a really tasty french onion dip, so all was well.

Then, they stopped stocking it!!! I've been to every hole in the wall grocery store and mega mart (they call it Hyper Panda) in the Eastern province and I can't find chip dip! They've got plenty of salsa, which does me little good because tortilla chips are 35 riyals per bag ($9).

Anyway, they have great sour cream here, so does anyone have a chip dip recipe that they would like to share? I tried a garlic dip recipe off the internet where you run about 20 cloves of garlic through a press and add sour cream - horrible! inedible! They don't have Lipton onion soup mix here either, so that's a problem.

Thanks!

The only way to get stuff here reliably is DHL. It's about $35 for a shipment. And they go through EVERYTHING - looking for pork products and porn, which are not allowed.

You know, I guess I could go to Bharain. They might have dip over there. They have pork products and porn over there - go figure.

Yea, Hummus is really tasty. Drizzle on some nice olive oil (which they have 50 kinds of in every store) and go to town. I'm looking for a sour cream-based type of dip.

Hmm I just mailed some stuff to Dammam overnight this morning. I wish I had know and I would have thrown in a package of lipton onion soup mix.

Go to sleep man, it's really late!

I have an office in Dammam (and one in Khobar). It's 9:00 PM here and the first day of Ramadan!! Whoo hoo!! Party! It's like the opposite of Mardi Gras.

Not that anyone gets freaky any other time of year.

Oh, and I'm trying to make some baked beans as well. It'll have everything that Bush's baked beans have - onions, beans, brown sugar... Except the PORK! I really miss pork.

Sausage, ham, bacon, St, Louis ribs, back ribs, pork butt, pork shoulder, pork tenderloin, pork chops...

Chip dip and pork - can't find it. And all the women dress like ninjas. They are really sweet, and tiny and have the most beautiful eyes. That's all you can see.

Nope, to make some great homemade dip put a packet of the powdered Ranch dressing mix into sour cream... then you're rockin....

tuna, miracle whip, garlic powder, salt pepper,& cream cheese mix it all up, great on Fritos...

jar of seafood cocktail sauce, 1 pack of fake crabmeat, mix together and pour over a block of room temp cream cheese.... serve with a butter knife on top of Ritz crackers... great for parties...

Pig porn would get me stoned in the town square in Riyadh or Jeddah. I'd probably just get sent home in this area.

OK, now this is a post I can work with. I used to put Tiger Sauce on a block of cream cheese. Ritz crackers are also $9 a box, but they really hold the fixin's.

There is an air base right near here. I can't get on there, but there is a parking lot outside. I can hang around the parking lot and get someone to bring me some nice contraband onion soup mix and ranch dressing!

I paid ~10 riyals in Khafji for these. I wasn't looking at dip, though.

You work for Aramco?

That sounds tasty!! They've got 50 kinds of yogurt here and maybe 15 different brands of cream cheese - including good ol' Philly!

The Ranch dressing recipe is what we use here at the house... it is really good and should be available to you...

not sure of the availability of the items for the other two dips, but they are equally as good...

The tuna recipe may not sound too good, but it really is.....

I'm with Aramco direct. Just made the switch after 25 years with Bechtel. Then I get here and we bid out a pipeline project and Bechtel wins the freaking bid! Can't get away from them even halfway around the world.
