Does Pelican freeze up all the time or is it my browser/connection?

I never know how long it will take to navigate to a thread with a click or how long it will take to load a post I make. Many times instantly and several times a session over a minute. Yesterday I got the "message" a few times, this site unavailable.

I just reloaded my browser to get to this window to post. Otherwise, I was gonna go make a sandwich.

Jim Richards 08-13-2010 03:18 PM

Not your browser, Milt. It's Pelican.

gr8fl4porsche 08-13-2010 03:29 PM

Yep

Same prob here.

mossguy 08-13-2010 03:35 PM

It's Pelican.

Zeke 08-13-2010 03:36 PM

Well, I don't like all the delays.

pwd72s 08-13-2010 05:17 PM

yep...same here.

legion 08-13-2010 06:53 PM

For me, it seems to be Comcast. Pelican is super-fast at work, and very slow at home.

GH85Carrera 08-14-2010 09:49 AM

I see that at home & and work.

legion 08-14-2010 12:11 PM

At work, we have a big fat tube right into a major backbone and bypass all commercial ISPs. At home, I have to get online through Comcast. I'm suggesting that people who still have problems at work are probably using a commercial ISP.

Buy more parts so that they can upgrade their computer servers! :)

GH85Carrera 08-14-2010 05:13 PM

I am doing my part!!

Zeke 08-17-2010 04:54 PM

Well, I just reloaded my browser and it unfroze me again. Maybe my problem is that I will have up to 3 Pelican tabs open. I started that years ago so I didn't have to wait on each action. 100's of times I have come in thru the back door, i.e., Pelican's main site to the BBS when the bookmark to the BBS would not work.

Or work in my time frame. ;) :)

futuresoptions 08-17-2010 04:56 PM

On and off for me.... some days yes, other days no... today is a yes day....

BGCarrera32 08-17-2010 05:01 PM

Pelican hangs well.

Are you saying its a well hung pelican? ;)

slodave 08-17-2010 05:09 PM

It's Pelican. It's been this way for months. Hangs on my home DSL, iPhone, at my clients...

JJ 911SC 08-17-2010 06:45 PM

Por_sha911 08-17-2010 07:46 PM

When Pelican gets slow I have opened a second browser tab to another website (and it is lightning fast) so it must be Pelican. But hey, its free.

Bill Douglas 08-17-2010 08:35 PM

When mine did a go slow down the bottom of the page it said "waiting for googleadds". Or something like that. Advertisments from the gooogle site are slowing (mine) it down. Pelican itself is fine :) Dirty google LOL.

Latest Firefox on the home laptop and most client pc's. iPhone is Safari.

slodave 08-17-2010 10:48 PM

Wayne, I'm not trying to sound callous, it's just coming out that way...

I have been noticing various degrees of slowness for months and it does happen from more than one location. I also will open another tab and check other sites and they will open quickly. As for the iPhone, wifi is almost always turned off and I see the forums hang via the 3G network as well. This happens both with my 3G and the new 4. I have also seen threads pop up on the 911 tech side from time to time with the same issues.

I don't have any ideas, but it seems that a lot of us have similar issues out there.

slodave 08-17-2010 11:00 PM

My laptop is about 4 yrs. old. I'll keep the video in mind and try and get some footage. ;)

Latest Firefox (work) and Safari (home). Same problems in both environments. The computers are less than 4 months old.

Zeke 08-18-2010 06:42 AM

firefox started to suck for me. I got viruses. Now google chrome. Great features.

Paul_Heery 08-18-2010 07:12 AM

I'm using Firefox 3.6.8 on a Linux platform. I used to experience some issues that are similar to what Milt describes. However, since disallowing the following cross-site connections, I have not experienced any slowdowns or other issues.

I have seen it to, and at work we have a seriously fast pipe. As Paul indicted, it seems to be tied to external data trying to load.

Ditto.... get a "waiting for (external server)" quite a bit. Doing a refresh usually unhangs it.

Jim Richards 08-18-2010 11:21 AM

Thanks Wayne. Hopefully, these steps will make all the difference in the world. :)

greglepore 08-18-2010 12:25 PM

Seems much better today... thx Wayne!

red-beard 08-18-2010 01:01 PM

Just had a "Server Unavaible" notice

Halm 08-18-2010 01:35 PM

I can see these problems on IE and Firefox. I can see them on my home AT&T Business Class DSL and on a client's 20 MB direct connection to the Internet. It's Pelican. Sorry Wayne.

nostatic 08-18-2010 02:52 PM

No, the issue is page load, not how quickly a new post shows. In the past when I would click the toolbar icon for pelican (Firefox or Safari), sometimes the ball would spin (in the Firefox tab) but it would take awhile before the page loaded. It seemed like it was waiting for either google ads or the big board or ? I'm willing to bet that disabling the big boards and moving the google stuff out of the header will solve what most people were seeing.

Geronimo '74 08-18-2010 09:37 PM

It's very up and down over here, sometimes normal sometimes slooooooooowww...

Like nostatic said, it's more of a pageload issue but slow post loading also happens

slodave 08-19-2010 07:13 PM

Here's a little video.... It was actually hanging for about 5 secs or so, before I grabbed the iPhone.

Link removed - You might want to save the link, then watch it. It was cut off on my screen. I am going to remove the video in a couple of days.

slodave 08-19-2010 09:28 PM

That video was from tonight.... :)
