I think part of the problem with them is in 92 it was an ultra high performance sedan. But in 92, I don't think anyone would have predicted how far the HP and performance race would have progressed. It's been way outclassed by all manner of "regular" Mercedes these days. For $10K-$15K, you can buy a much later model E500 that is faster and a better ride overall.

And Porsche did have some involvement with the 500E, but really, who cares. That doesn't add much value, IMO.

And, it's a 4 door automatic. That's a class of car that never becomes "collectible."

I still think it's a cool car, if I had unlimited garage space, I'd pick one up.
Perfectly stated. If it were a 92' SL I'd still show it lots of love, but an E class? Has to be a generation or two later to get even a second glance.

LOL...'92 SL has the same engine as the '92-'94 E500E (M119..32V 5.0L 322hp)

It's pre-Chrysler if that means anything.

A lot of people say the M.B. cars from that era are junk but I disagree (mine is a 2001 and has had precious few problems - mostly due to sensors wearing out, but nothing major). It's built well and lives up to the 3-pointed-star marquee.

Now if it were a 928, then it'd be exotic. And worth a fortune no doubt.

Poorly said comment. Some low mileage pristine condition 500e's will run for 25k or so. Even within Mercedes Benz it is already considered a "classic".

Slightly over 10,000 were built in total with just about 1500 shipped to the states. The car was hand built and assembled, it took 18 days for it to be completed. Newer e500's are not hand built, and they're actually not much faster.

Porsche helped build the 500e, including tuning the chassis and suspension for better handling. With its 50/50 weight balance and generally light weight it will beat any new e500 around the track. With aftermarket track wheels and tires, this car will obliterate most other street cars around a track.

Also, if you research what 500e owners have to say about the car, they won't have many complaints. The whole frame was reinforced from the baseline w124 models, its literally a street legal tank as far as build quality. No new Mercedes will match this build quality.

With all that being said, these cars most DEFINITELY have collector value. There are people out there willing to pay over $25,000 for a nice model 500e. And I must say I am one of those people.
