Pretty sure Jeremy Clarkson said the early Maser 'flappy paddle' gearbox was awful.

If I were going to spend that kind of money on something that will be expensive to maintain, I'd probably buy one of these...

The Ferrari will be the same maintenance cost / cost to own. Costs more but sells for more too again ...

If they are equal the Maser is a bit more unique of a vehicle... at least in So Cal where you can't walk across the street without tripping over a Ferrari or Porsche.

2003 Dodge Ram 2500 HD with Cummins.

Worst piece of turd ever hatched. I can't keep it unbroken long enough to sell it (or run it across an auction block...).

I spent $700 on it in the last week alone, and $460 the week before (just for parts). It's been well over $15,000 in the past year to keep the Big Red Turd on the road.

It's amazing that it has actually been cheaper to run my race car than the tow vehicle this year (and I had 2 expensive days at the track already).

The Porsche 911... Specifically the 3.2 Carrera with G50 gearbox.

And yes a good one is expensive to buy but you'll never regret spending the money up front ~ I know I'm stating the obvious.
My 78 SC has given me almost new car reliability in nearly 12 years of ownership.
The biggest problem was the gearbox and I replaced that with one from an 83.
Other than that it's been oil/filter changes and brake fluid renew. Normal parts like brake pads and stuff goes without saying.
Zero rust... Starter motor ~ original. Alternator replaced 6 years ago.
In other words better than some so called new cars from the dealership.

It's just the way it is. New Ferrari, Maserati, Forget it... Budget 5 to 6k a year just to have it in your driveway. That doesn't include insurance/registration or fuel.

You just flat bought the wrong year.... That was very early in the life of the new "quiet" cummins.... The earlier ones were bulletproof, and now that they've worked the kinks out the quiet ones aren't bad either... Dads got a '99 with ~220k on the clock and I'd guess hes spent less than 3k on repairs since he bought it new.

I think your dad may be in the minority. While the early 2nd gen (94-98) was known for being a long life, trouble free vehicle, the late 2nd gen (98.5 to 02) had the notorious VP44 issues, as well as an expensive and proprietary ECM that has known issues. I would suspect that the problem with Billy's 03 is that it is the first year of production on a new system. I spent over $2000 in 2007 for repairs to my 99, and just finished spending another $4000 last month. Unfortunately I know the truck needs another $1500 spent but it will have to wait.

My 993 is 14 yrs. old and the a/c still blows ice cold and has never been touched. I've never had a single mechanical problem (that wasn't a result of some aftermarket part or someone else's work) with this car in seven yrs. of ownership. I'm spoiled and can't imagine getting a fussy, expensive car.

My boss' former car. Maybe a 2007. Neat car for someone else to own, as the cost of ownership seemed astronomical. I don't know how DIY friendly it was, but an oil change at the dealership cost $800. He'd hit a pothole and flatten a tire. $500 to replace. Thank goodness he didn't dent the rim, as that ran $2K. There were little electrical glitches which took the dealership long periods of time to diagnose and correct. Parts are unobtainable. Even the dealership took to cannibalizing unsold cars on the lot to replace parts, as it took forever to get them from Italy. It's not like there's a warehouse of parts sitting around anywhere. If you need some part, you order it from the factory and wait for them to make it before then can even ship it to you. But man, it sounded great. And driving it was like dating a supermodel--even in car-jaded LA, people look and point.

That is interesting about the Dodge Diesels. I know that all the people I know with a Ford Diesel wish they had bought a Dodge and NOT just because of the engine. Ford transmissions are just something else and not in a good way.

The problems cashflyer mentions I've never heard of before... A friend of my dads is the Service manager at the local dodge dealer too... We know of more than a few trucks that are on their way or have made the 300k mark with ease.
