M1A / M14 Stock replacement to "Tactical"
My M1A needs work to the stock to bed it in. I'm thinking it might be better money spent to get a "drop in" tactical" stock and hand guard.
I'd like rails for a scope, and maybe laser. Integrated bi-pod. I like Key-hole stocks, but pistol grip would be fine. I don't care if the stock is collapsible. And my preference would be user installed, but if something really is worth it, I might spring for sending the rifle out. Ideas? Oh yeah, I want it evil black...

In a word: Don't do it.
Ok, three words. I had a modular chassis on my M1A and after two years I realized I had not taken it to the range. The reality was it was to heavy, bulky and awkward and I just didn't feel like shooting it. I can't speak for the Sage EBR (boy does it look odd) but I know the JAE stock is just as heavy if not heavier than the Troy MCS. I'd look into either a McMillian or a good USGI or Comm. walnut stock, but either will need to be bedded.

i started writing and my power went off. now at super secret bat cave puter.
i ECHO the above remark "DONT DO IT" the entire bottomline to an M-14/M1-A is BEDDING and BARRELS! why does a HK PSG-1 cost so damn MUCH? because NOTHING touches the barrel! NOTHING! a semi auto ANYTHING is a GIANT PITA to accurize period. mcmillian usmc stock PERIOD! and have SOMEJUAN that knows how to bed it CORRECTLY! you never never never EVAR want to remove action from stock once bedded on a M-14 and thats right from springfield. thats why i am taking mine to arringtonaccuracy.com i have a bunch of uber zoomy bueno cool goodies that i have scrounged that dictates action coming out of stock. thats why phil is doing it. rails on a full size m-14 are stoopid. they are already heavy as hell. putting them a jenny craig DIET is the uber answer. if ya want rails for yer grenade launcher/lazer beam death ray/mega flashlight/swinging beer can holder.........................take a crowbar to yer wallet and buy a SOCOM with rails. also each and everyjuan of these M-14's/M1-A's is different when it comes to scope mt. tolerances. the ONLY bolt on plug and play mt. is the 3rd generation springfield mt. and they are heavy. im probably going with a sadlak 82nd airborne scope mt. and lightweight rings. when you hang a scope/scope mt/rings/bipod/bipod mt./ combo tool and cleaning kit in stock/sling/cheek piece with pouch full of crap..................they really are a GIANT PITA to hump. ask me how i KNOW! my damn super duper match has been relegated to bench/matches/tailgate/sitting on a hill glassing my azz off. its wayyyyyy too heavy to hump anywhere period. hence the diet it is going on. mcmillians tacti-kool stock is a premium stock for a premium price. but you nor i are playing bagdad door to door meet and greet. and........................what about yer LOP(length of pull) that all changes when the polar express comes thru come hunting season with a heavy jacket on. or if yer wearing a bulletproof vest for when the deer and elk SHOOT BACK(not likely evar) bolts always will be the most accurate rifles on planet. taking a semi auto from anyjuan is just down right pricey to accurize. hence the price on a m-25 carlos hathcock "whitefeather" or a super duper match. and HK's PSG-1 or MSG-90 or G3SG/1. put the long barrel in a mcmillian usmc stock and have it bedded by a qualified M-14 specialist. buy the SOCOM w/rails for yer short barrel and hanging the stainless swinging beer can holder off the sides.

If you absolutely need a rail get a Springfield SOCOM 2. I have M14 EBR's at work and they are super heavy and not balanced at all. For now I stick with my M4 until they get me a SOCOM 16.

my socom is getting a ZEISS REFLEX for its picatinny short rail PERIOD!
why? lightweight/solar powered backup/easily removed and can be placed on my m-1 carbine picatinny rail or on my benelli semi auto M-2 snotgun or on a lever action w/picatinny rail. LIGHTWEIGHT! my socom has on it: usgi "nam" nylon sling harris bipod w/sadlak dual allen bolt mt in front of sling mt. cheek piece with pouch that holds (2) 5 rd hunting mags check piece also holds 5 rds usgi combo tool in stock butt usgi cleaning kit in stock butt and every sadlak goodie known to man offered for the internals. gonna try a NATIONAL MATCH rear sight aperature(hooded) and see how that works with WIDE front nuklar(trijicon) night sight. add a checkmate 25rd mag.........................and it starts getting heavy.
